UCC/Castlewhite Wireless

I registered my laptop in the Boole Basement this morning and everything seemed to be working fine there, but when I got back to Castlewhite I only have local access to the network.

UCC provides the wireless for Castlewhite.

I'm able to browse the internet but can't use MSN or Skype (BIG PROBLEM!)

Someone with experience please reply.

I think everything on the campus broadband goes through a proxy server on the UCC campus and only allows web browsers(port 80),This is because the broadband provided to UCC is from HEAnet which is something to do with the board of education so they'd rather block stuff..

    I think that's why anyway

You could use E buddy messenger for your Msn though,Or instead get o2 broadband on the student offer for €9.99 a month

    Thanks, makes sense.

It means my long-distance relationship just got a whole lot more difficult :(

    Yeah that won't be easy!

I've just found this on the UCC site:
All network access will be through a proxy operating on port 80 - i.e. http (web) access only. If you have any queries on this, please feel free to ask at the Student Helpdesk.

    From here : http://www.ucc.ie/en/sit/wireless/

Again,The only thing you can do is get another broadband provider,And as you're in student accommodation (and on a student budget) options are limited and this would be the best: http://www.ucc.ie/en/sit/bodytext,82274,en.html

But if you use Skype for phoning people the calls quality wouldn't be great and would be breaking up quite a bit.

Sorry for being the bearer of bad news

I haven't used the student wireless in 2 years, so this might be a little out of date. Firstly I suggest making sure that skype and msn have the proxy information filled in (I only mention this in case you are using a browser other than the system default - in which case skype/msn mightn't of picked up on it).

Additionally there is (or was) a socks proxy at socks-proxy.local, depending you might be able to access the net directly (doubtful) or maybe a less restrictive proxy. Of course they may frown on you doing this sort of stuff, so at your own risk.

They must have changed things, then. Because two years ago, I know msn was available through the Castlewhite net.

Have been in college 2 years and never been able to access MSN, etc. on the network. As the first reply says, HEAnet don't want anything but browsers web through 'em.

it depends on how u have ur own settings!

for vista u must change the default from office to home that will let u access msn etc

    xp it shud work ok

this whole port thing is annoying as sftp wont work on campus.....

Just for the record,Msn does work,I assumed it would be blocked but since I've connected to the campus wi-fi it has worked.

    Notnormal,

Skype can work as it runs over port 80 + 443 which will be open on the firewall.
Go into Skype connection settings (In options) and make sure it's ticked to use port 80/443.

As for MSN, it uses quite a few ports but MSN Messenger and Windows Live may have different ports, might run over 80/443 and that may be why your friends can connect and not you. Install whatever version they have.

Alternatively, you can run MSN over a http proxy.
