A few questions about the dole.

Finally recieved a cheque for my back payment a few days ago and another letter telling me I will recieve my weekly payment every Tuesday. I never realised the dole was so high 200 euro every week I thought id be getting something around 100. Someone told me though because I qualified from college I get an extra 100 is that true?

I went up to my local welfare office asking what am I meant to do with this cheque and do I sign on there every week. She kinda seemed in a hurry so couldnt clearly hear what she was saying and to be honest wanted to get out of their as soon as I could.

But I think she said that every 3 months i have to go up to the local social welfare office and sign on. Then every tuesday I just go to my post office and collect my payment? So on Tuesday do I just bring my back payment cheque aswell and theyll hand over that money to me or how does it work?

I feel bad at the minute for taking the dole and even knowing its such an amount when at the minute I would be able to survive on 100 a week. I suppose it comes around though as I really struggled to pay my way through college when I couldnt get a grant even though I needed one and seeing all my mates spending their grant money when I hadnt two cents to put together pissed me off.

Another thing is, say if I manage to get say a day or two work here a week or even every second week does this affect your dole?

Thank you for anyone that replies.

hi op- in answer to your first question you should lodge the cheque! no point bringing it to the post office they cannot cash it for you. .

collect your payment on whatever day she told you in the post office every week, i think you said Tuesday, mine happens to be a wednesday. Try collect it the day your supposed to, the post office usually sends them back within 48hrs ( this varies from post office to post office)

You sign on once a month in the welfare office. when you collect your payment this Tuesday-the post office will give you a receipt, your next signing date will be printed on the bottom of that. Make sure you dont miss your signing day-its a hassle you wont need

Best of luck to ya :)

The full rate of dole is 204 euro per week. If you're under 20 it's 100 euro per week, so you must be over 20.

If you get a bit of casual work here and there, just tell the social welfare about it. 3 days or less per week (not including sundays) and you're still eligible for part time dole. If you're on JSB, they divide your dole up by the number of days, and if you're on JSA, they take the means you're earning into account as well. You don't need to worry about any of that though, they'll do the calculations for you.

If you feel that 204 is too much for you, they will be very happy to take it back or a portion if you wish to donate it to the state. You sign every month. I am not sure you qualify for the "dole" if you are in full time education unless you were previously unemployed, which clearly you were not as your knowledge of the social welfare system is lacking. It is fraud to claim welfare benefits if you are not entitled to them and is punishable by a large fine or imprisonment or both.

I believe the OP is finished with his 3rd level education. I don't think there is anything to suggest that he/she is committing fraud, which is a serious allegation and not one that I like to see bandied about on this forum.

There was no allegation but as I misread his statement about college, I was merely pointing out the implications if one inadvertantly drew the dole without entitlement.

Thanks Xiney. You are right I finished my degree last year but cant get a job not even work experience. Its very depressing, and as ive never signed on before thats why I didnt know much about the dole "itsonlywords".

Regarding how often you are to sign on: it's once a month if you live within 10 miles of the social welfare office and once every 3 months if you live further away than that.

So 'itsonlywords', I guess your knowledge of the social welfare system isn't exactly perfect either.
