Ethernet in Halls

How many ethernet ports are there in the modern appartments? And more importantly in the double rooms?? I'm sharing a double room with a mate and both of us have laptops, so two ethernet ports in our room would be make things way easier!

I'm not sure about Halls, but even if there's only one port, ethernet switches are quite cheap (around 20 euro in Peats). They're basically like extension cords for ethernet ports.

Yeah, I know but it unless we buy long ethernet clables, we'll be stuck sitting on the floor beside each other and what not! (slight exaggeration.. lol)

CAT5 cables can be up to 100m in length according to the specification. You can be at least 200m apart then :P

I know you can buy huge ethernet cables, we have one for our xbox. But I'm not asking about ethernet cables, I'm asking about ethernet ports

You were concerned about having to sit together.

Modern Single rooms have two ports of which only one works. I imagine Modern Doubles will have either two ports working, or four of which two work. ISS only allow one MAC address per port though, so don't use splitters.

Might have to get a router to bypass the epic fail that is ISS, so.

    Unless you're talking about a 3G modem, no, that won't work. (I recommend 3 (15GB/mo) or O2(Student Deal)).

You're right. There are four ports in two pairs in each double room. one of each pair is for voice (not used) the other is for data. Each person has their own port. Incidentally there is a network port behind the TV in the living area in the modern apartments, though i'm not sure if ISS will turn it on to allow students to play with their xboxes there. I guess you'll have to ask!

It will be fast enough for what ever you need to do. Internet services are connected to the main campus either by leased line or wireless link. I found the speed to be as fast as the main campus anyway

You will have just about the fastest internet connection available anywhere, speedtest

Ok I'm cheating I'm on campus, the link from halls into campus is 200Mbps (with a backup 100Mbps link) and the link from College to the internet is 1Gbps with two independent connections

Before you move in might be an idea to run the security scan from the college so you know it will work.

Xboxes etc are not supported even if there where the proxy server will block them. Its one machine per port, unless you can find a computer science student who can set you up some class of router with a cloned mac address and nat
    Dear Network User,

From 10AM Tuesday, September 15th 2009 students will be required to re-register their computers with the self service Network Admission Control system to connect to the College network for the academic year 2009/2010.

Instructions on how to re-register with the Nac system will be available at http://isservices.tcd.ie/network/snac.php

You can check if your computer meets these requirements by performing a 'remote scan' in advance of returning to College by using http://134.226.14.100/authentication/_remotescan.html

At the 'remote scan' site you can download a program that will identify any updates you need to apply to your computer which will speed up your computer registration when you arrive on campus.

If you require any query regarding this email, please contact the IS Services helpdesk at http://isservices.tcd.ie/general/contact.php

    Regards,

    The IS Services Helpdesk

Yes, there's two ports in double rooms.

No, you won't be able to play Xbox Live.

:/ I wanted Gb internet :( guess Ill just HAVE to live with 200MB net

Yup. 200Mbps is still up to 25MB/s (fastest I've ever seen it actually go is 12MB/s during that glorious week between when we found out a way of getting torrents to work and when ISS "fixed" it).

When proxya and proxyb were b0rked and not looking for logons? :pac:

use it in the middle of the night? Doesnt matter, my net is still only 10Mb at home (or 1.25MB)

Nah. We discovered Proxifier before ISS did. Or at least, we discovered its torrenting potential.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,292 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

You will never get more than 12.5MB per sec i.e 100Mbps since thats the maximum the ethernet connection can support.

If you want xbox, torrents or anything else you are stuck, msn, skype and so on all work fine

Will online games work on the laptop, or is it the same story as the consoles?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,292 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

    Probably not

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 92 ✭✭Fedule

Some online games will work. Steam won't work (though you can proxify it and still get downloads, you just can't connect to servers to play games). I don't think Battlenet works either. Other games... you'll just have to test. Anything you play within a browser will work.

Still works if you aren't a noob.

Really? It looks to me like they've disabled all communication with trackers at the user account level. Torrent clients report as connectable, but can't see any peers. How do you do it?

Why is it that the call function on MSN never works at Halls? Or the webcam for that matter? =/ It works fine on Skype however...
