Radisson great location but a little pricey.
    Rezydent great location, reasonable prices.
Brama Hostel cheap and cheerful in a very good location.

What sort of budget are you talking?

Hostel-wise I stayed at a place called Nathan's Villa. Really great place, with cheap nightly bbq out the back, good staff and cinema/pool table/bar downstairs in the basement. Haven't been there in about 4 years now so mighta changed. Also I hear Krakow now has a reputation as a stag night destination :(

I have only stayed in a luxury boutique hotel called the Hotel Stary and I would recommend it highly (its pricey it was €250 per night for one night last November). Right beside the town square. Loads of brilliant restaurants and lots to see.

Stayed in the Hotel Ibis Krakow Centrum about 5 months ago. Nice hotel for business - 10 minutes from city center square.

    Book when you get there.
You can do both Auschwitz/Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt mines in one day. There are many companies offering tours. The only problem is they tend to all arrive at the one time, so it's a bit crowded. The best way to see the Auschwitz/Birkenau memorial is to be there early in the morning, before 10am.

If you want the name of a good private taxi driver who will run you around places you want to go, PM me.

We stayed in the Sheraton in November 2007 and I'd highly recommend it, lovely hotel in a good location. I think we paid around €500 for four nights B&B through yeego.com

We toured Auschwitz/Birkenau with one of the local companies and found it fine, I don't think you would need to book in advance.

http://www.staypoland.com is a good site for booking accommodation in Poland. They often have deals. I've used them many times with no problems.

Whatever you do go on one of the bike tours offered by a company that are based on one of the corners of the main square. Was the absolute highlight of the trip when I was in Krakow. They'll take you all around the city, to the old Jewish Ghetto, the Castle, an old WWII artillery emplacement, Schindler's factory.

    Heres the website: http://www.krakowbiketour.com/abouttour.html

    hey Fonzy,

We stayed in a lovely hotel called The Andels which was right opposite the main train station and the big shopping centre Galeria Krakowska.

    http://www.andelscracow.com/en/home/

It is a gorgeous new modern hotel and it cost us €323 for 4 nights in a king size room. The rooms were fab and the breakfast which was included in the price was huge..buffet style with ur usual cereal, fryup, pancakes, muffins etc...The hotel was central to everything and we could not fault it at all.

You can also take the train in from the airport to the main train station and just walk across to the hotel. Also the tram stops at the side of the hotel which is very handy if you want to take a trip down to the old town. Everything is very cheap in Krakow especially the alcohol :p if you go, do visit the Jazz Club Muniaka in Ul Florianska. The live bands there are brilliant and this is where OH and I were introduced to the tasty Zubrowka with apple juice. If you like vodka you will love this - tastes just like apple pie and a firm favourite with us, which we have drunk ever since we came home !...:D

We did the tours of Auschwitz/birkenau as well but we made our own way there. You can take a bus from the main bus station. I cant remember how much it cost but it was little money. We also did a tour called the 'Schindlers Tour' with the Cool Tour Company which was really enjoyable and takes you down to the Schindler factory and around the old town.

Krakow itself I found beautiful...very historic and charming but unfortunately I didnt find the locals friendly at all but u cant have it every way ! :)...

Best of luck in your search, lets know if you need any more help :D

Would recommend the Sheraton stayed there last year. Really nice great breakfast! Staff lovely & rooms too. 5 mins walk from the Castle.

Whenever I go to Auschwitz and Birkenau (been there a few times now), I take the train. Beware though - the trains are run by state company PKP who have no affiliation with the concentration camp museums. On some days, the last train back from Oświęcim (Polish name for Auschwitz) leaves before the museums close. If you are not careful, you could end up stranded in Auschwitz.

Stayed in these apartments about 6 months ago and some of my friends stayed there in summer. Not at all expensive, just off the main square. They can organise tours for you through their reception, where you will be picked up at the apartments and a taxi from the airport. Did the Auschwitz and salt mines tours. I'd stay there again if I was going.

I recently booked the Sheraton on Hotels.com for November, it was €57 euro per room a night for a standard room and €63 for a deluxe.

Wow prices sure have changed a bit since when I was there in 1997 and the hostel was under £4 a night (which was actually about 50% more than the year old guide book had said)!

Glad I got to see it before it went all touristy. Terrible if the place is now full of stag nights as a previous poster said. That's what cheap direct flights do I guess. :(
