My daughter was forced to withdraw from her course of study at NUI in 2009 due to financial restrictions. She informed the university and Donegal County Council about her situation and the decison, which was not taken lightly, was made to withdraw from her course. Donegal County Council cancelled her grant application and she received no money whatsoever.

It now appears that she is is being penalized by the VEC for being in the unfortunate position of not being able to continue with her original studies because of financial hardship. This decision by the VEC will cause her further financial difficulties as she was relying on her grant to pay expenses such as rent etc. Furthermore the original course was a level 8 BSc (Hon) in Science while her current course is a level 7 HND in early childhood education.

We think the VEC's decision is under the circumstances entirely unfair. Furthermore she had been told by Donegal County Council and NUI Galway that because she dropped out of her course so early on and was not in receipt of any grant money she would get the full grant. We have appealed the VEC decision but they cant even be bothered to reply to us!! Is there anyone on this forum who can give us some help or advice as to what to do next  Thank you

how long did she stay on the NUI course?
If she did more than one year on the course she would not be eligible for a grant on a level 7 course for the same duration as the first course.
e.g. if she spent 15 months on the level 8 course, she would have to be 15 months on the level 7 course before she would get a grant.

bridan90, how long was she in NUI college?

I would contact a local TD and get them to help you out. Seeing as your daughter NEVER received any payments, then she was not assisted by the VEC at all.

This is good grounds for an appeal.
