Two things about cycle parking... and I'm not trying to criticize the latter it's great to see more stuff for cyclists, really close up parking and larger parking offer two different things, both are needed.

A post over on copenhagenize.com about an interisting little survey on how far people are willing to walk to cycle parking. I know streets and squares over there are full of bicycles, but the same applies here to provision if we want to make cycling as attractive as possible.

And some good news, if nobody has mentioned it before... Dublin City Council have converted the ground floor of the Drury Street Car Park into cycle parking:

That actually seems pretty cool. I'm assuming it's paid parking yeah? Any idea how much? Would nearly be worth it if it was supervised...

    nice

but its a pity you will always get fcuking assho1es who will wreck the bikes , ie kick in the wheels or steal parts

thats 1 reason why i wouldnt cycle into town to do shopping

ie , if there was 100 % garauntee that your bike wouldnt be touched id cycle in and cycle out , no traffic , happy days but no gaurauntees on that

I cycle a lump of steel round town which is cheaper than the locks I lock it with, I love it.

If you parked your car in Drury street and it was vandalised, you'd have a case againts the car park, so I'm sure its the same with bikes. (As far as I'm aware, those signs telling you that your car is parked at your risk are incorrect)

Anyone remember back when Hardings used to be near O'Connell Bridge ? You used to be able to cycle into the city and they'd mind it for you in their big storage area for a small fee for the day, that was a great facility. It was a good bike shop too.

Isn't there a bike shop in Temple Bar that provides bike storage? I think converting Drury Street into a bike park is a gret idea. Evenif you guys who are concerend about bikes been damaged/ stolen etc., If you do cycle in the city centre, At least in Drury street, your bike would be parked indoors, which will keep it dry etc. It would cretainly encourage me to cycle into Dublin.

I can't imagine they're charging people to park bikes there - if they are they'd need to look at a new barrier system to stop people walking out without paying...

Well if there's no charge, then its most likely "at your own risk" parking. Still better than on street parking though. Im sure they have CCTV, so your bike is definitly more secure.

I think I was told it was due to be installed, the racks were just installed in the last two days.

That's a deadly facility! Good location too, I'd be fairly happy about parking my bike in there when out and about in town

I'm not sure I agree. I dunno if this could turn out to be a one stop shop for bike thieves if it wasn't supervised. But that said I dunno if vandals would bother going out of their way to kick your wheels about or cut cables, etc.

I'd nearly rather pay a fee and feel safe in the knowledge that my bike will be there and as I left it when I return to it. And dry!

The drury's still out on this one.... Uggggh, sorry - face palm time. :)

I can see both sides of the argument but..

There are so many other, easier locations to steal bikes around Dublin, I can't see a "Professional" thief trying to steal bikes here.

Secondly, most vandalised bikes are parked "on the street" and the culprits are very "opportunistic" types, i.e. drunks walking home from the pub who think its a great idea to jump on parked bikes etc.

No i think the advantages cretainly outweigh the disadvantages. Only one way to find out though! :D

No idea actually. I got my Diamond Back Topanga MTB there back in the 90s, 1991/2 I think. It was a great bike, lasted forever. In fact it was still running until 2 years ago when my brother left it in his apartment complex while he left the county for a year, neglecting to tell me where it was. When I found out where it was it had been removed by the management company as they thought it was abandoned and was long sold on/scrapped.

Think I got mine around 93/94. Great bike, still going strong. As good as the day I bought it! Still original except for new wheels, new chainset, new chain and cassette, new handlebars, new pedals, new saddle, new seat post....in fact think the front derailer is the only original part left on the frame! :D

Yeah, the cellar reminded me of a Bomb shelter or the London underground. I also remember been at a trade show in there and I met Barry Hoban! Anyone actually going to admit remembering him? :D

The security desk is at the red arrow in this pic.

CCTV is to be fitted and air pumps and a few other bits.
