I have MediaTomb running on a Linux server, streaming media (Videos, Music and Pics) to the PS3 and even the wife thinks it is the dogs danglies

You don't need linux, Windows will do the sme, just use dlna compliant media software, as far as I know Windows Media Player is compatible, but I could be wrong

PS3 media server is also excellent. Highly recommend it.

i find ps3 media server is the best one as it has software for practically any machine windows/linux/mac/etc.

i use it on my macbook (as it's silent) and connect my NAS as a SaMBa share on the macbook and then share that.

    i then fall asleep to south park/family guy/simpsons/qi/futurama :)
