On the 17th of Sept Aldi have cycling gear including SPD shoes and the rest is mainly winter gear including overshoes. Link

overshoes don't look the best. I've a pair of those waterproof trousers though-f'in deadly! I also have the gloves from a couple of years ago. The snot patch on the thumb is simply fantastic. :p

First thing which struke me were the gloves.

I've a pair too, probably the best winter gloves I've ever used - superb value.

I got the overshoes before and they were crap, zip busted and even before that they weren't great for keeping your feet dry/warm. My advice is to spend the money on decent overshoes as there is nothing worse then cold feet when out on a long spin. On the other hand the hat was good, fitted well under my helmet and covered my ears to keep them nice and warm.

you cant buy drink before 10 am

winter jacket was excellent as were the gloves (waterproof for an hour in heavy rain wet after but hands still warm)
overshoes were water resistant and pretty pointless but would be ok for keeping a bit of wind off (zips fine on mine but there a bit loose)
    socks were quite good
spd shoes will be my commuter shoes when i get to commuting !

been waiting to get some gear for a few months now.
have loads of their stuff and its excellent.

Any opinions on the hi-vis jacket?
    http://www.aldi.ie/ie/html/offers/2827_10490.htm

I bought a similar one...cheaper version, I think... from Aldi a couple of years ago, but it retains every drop of sweat.

I got those gloves a few years ago too but found them very sweaty, fine for a quick cycle to work but just too sweaty for a long weekend cycle

Judging by the look of them it's SPD only(this gives me a good excuse to shell out on SPDs for my mountain bike :D)

I would'nt mind those shoes, or the cycling pants, which will no doubt come in handy over the winter months.

What's the story with Aldi, will these only be available on the 17th, in a limited quantity, or will I be good to just walk in in the afternoon?

What's the story with sizing does anyone know, is like the Seán Kelly jerseys, regular cycling gear or just regular sizing?

sizing is usually normal enough. the cycling tops will not be skin tight like say club stuff.

dont mind other posters. the aldi stuff is very good.
its a fraction of the cost of other bike brands and i have several pairs of shorts and trousers for a couple of years and they have taken serious abuse mountain biking and are perfect.

the shoes last time seemed very good. ususally you get them a size or so bigger than normal shoes.

availability depends greatly on the location.
if cycling is popular then get in nearly but usually the bike stuff this time of year heading into winter is not in great demand.
i saw shoes earlier in year about 4 weeks after they werer released in some shops.

Whats the story with the shoes?
Do you need to buy cleats to fit, or do they fit straight into Shimano SPD clipless pedals.
I have a pair of SPD pedals, I was just waiting to get a pair of shoes before I fittted them to the bike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 484 ✭✭bcirl03

Bought the Aldi gear before and no complaints, might be cheap in price but did the job 100%.

Will be getting more on Thursday.

Cleats come with pedals, not shoes.

Thanks Lumen. Sorry for asking stupid questions.
It's just when I got the bike, they threw in the SPD pedals. The guy in the shop said when I was getting shoes, I'd have to get cleats aswell.
But basically if I get these shoes, they should fit the pedals.

He should have given you the cleats that went with those pedals.
    You can buy spares though.

funny you should say that. Went into the cycle shop in Arnotts yesterday looking for winter gloves and the guy recommended the Aldi ones!!! Anyway, he had a lovely pair of full finger padded road gloves so I bought those (for autumn).

I'll get the Aldi ones for winter!!

Well I went in this morning to Parnell Street and stocked up on some nice little bargains. I love the Aldi shirts for layering up in the winter on cold, relatively short, commutes. Got another pair of the gloves too (got them last winter and I know they're somewhere in my house but it's anyone's guess where!) The reflective bands are great too, really handy for a cycle or a jog. A good morning altogether I think!

Stock was running out pretty quickly though, by 9.10 rails were empty! They were being replenished alright but I'd say anyone looking to get something, head down sooner rather than later!

    :)

Checked a local store this morning and the shoes never came into stock into any store.
Will have to spend big bucks now.

Got to my local store at 9.15 and business was 'brisk', managed to get one of everything in XL.
Stock was low-ish (l got the last XL jacket)
No SPD shoes to be had, according to the staff there was a quality control issue and they were withdrawn from sale.

stuff flying out the doors in tralee this morn.
have a look at the thermal tops and bottoms. they are very good and thankfully not in great demand. for some reason.

for the poster "spending big" on shoes.
no need. google "specialized defroster" and buy them for about €70 online.

great all year round boot that you wont need overshoes with etc.
itll keep feet nice and dry, considering our summers it is an all year boot.

waterproof jacket had a weird cut on me tight in an xl over a t shirt
but bought socks base layers (not as thick as last years ss ones which are the best base layers i've seen ) 2 jerseys one soft jacket, tights and overtrousers
    cant complain
steady stream of people in letterkenny today

i went to Parnell St this morning (around 9.30) and th eplace had been fleeced! Does anyone know if they are restocking during the day? I asked 2 ginnets working there and they were not the most helpful.

i went to gorey shop this morning. got the waterproof jacket and one red/one blue of the winter jackets. seem to be reasonalbe made. perfet for the wet winter ahead. the tights looked ok too but dident get those. best thing about getting them there is the ability to try them on. i had to get xl which were the largest they had. better to use these over the winter than pay 3 - 4 times the price in a lbs, me thinks anyway. dident see the overshoes or gloves there ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭biomed32

got up early and went to the aldi in maynooth and stocked up on the waterproofs, gloves and beanie and overshoe set, was very quiet when i went in but as i was leaving there was steady activity around the section, i would say the place is fleeced by now

When I was leaving there around 9.15 the second load of stock they put out was nearly gone, I've never seen anything like it! It's the first time I've gone in before work - I normally go down around lunch time, when there's cycling or running gear in, and they always seem to have just restocked. Try again around 12.30 maybe

good gear in general was tempted by the rain jacket but from experience you will sweat buckets in them would be better off spending that bit more for a decent one

Cheers for the heads up guys...got everything I needed except the waterproof bottoms...hopefully will be a dry winter :)

Grabbed the rain jacket by mistake though was intending to grab the jersey/top type thing...I guess I can exchange it afterwards unless Aldi have some sort of draconian exchange policy....

went down to Tullamore @11am and there is a good selection of everything left. Got a load of XL gear, seems good quality. The winter cycling trousers are great, gel padding, these have to be at least €70 each in the shops! no shoes there either, biggest decision was red or blue! went for the blue in the end!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 405 ✭✭davgtrek

no their very good for exchanging stuff. obviously keep tags and stuff on it.

aldi jackets are similar to most jackets in that i find you sweat buckets in them all. trick is to wear good base layer that keeps in the sweat a bit better and you wont feel as wet.

its ireland anyway where its wet/humid without any real difference between inside/outside your gonna sweat pretty much in any jacket from €20 - €120.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 180 ✭✭dexty

oh yeah, many thanks for the heads up on this, ran down straight away when i seen the post here. Also, went back at 1pm to change something and it was no bother at all.

Went to Carlow, they had two pairs of shoes* and @€;27.99 (€10 less than advertised), gift. They didn't have gloves, overshoes or baselayers. I wore the winter jersey playing golf this morning and it's comfortable and warm. Got waterproofs, rain jacket and cycling leggins. So with the €50 I didn't spend I'm off to my LBS to buy SPD pedals :D

*That's total pairs of shoes not types or sizes.

Tried some of the gear this evening:

Gloves: Very snug but I took one off mid-ride and the lining moved which resulted in 5 minutes of trying to get little finger back in.

Jacket: Nice fit (not as good as my Altura obviously) but you do sweat loads.

Tights: I liked these a lot, fleece lined and knee articulation. The pad isn't great though not very comfy but I will use them.

Socks: Seem good quality but a bit too thin for my liking.

Conclusion: You get what you pay for!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 493 ✭✭Redjeep!

I bought a couple of pairs of gloves. They seem ok for the money.

There was a couple of women looking for stuff. One of them had obviously been given a long list from a husband or boyfriend and was trying to collect it all together and was getting stressed out. She picked up a pair of gloves and turned to her friend.

"On jeezus, look it says they're size 5, how am I meant to know what's the right size ?"

I leant over - "I think you'll find it's an S, it stands for SMALL...."

Made me laugh ( and her friend).:D

got a top for horse-riding in in the winter just as an extra layer - though had their waterproof trousers before and they're excellent value for money. I work outdoors in all weathers and they've never let me down in 2 years.

Went to Santry at lunch yesterday and they had plenty of stock but they didn't have the long sleeved cycling shirt in blue and I wanted to get the jacket and shirt in blue.So I decided to go to Aldi Ashbourne after work which turned out to be a big mistake as there was nothing left only a couple of items in small size.I then drove to Finglas but they had very limited stock left also so I ended up back where I began in Santry. Luckily there was still plenty of stock left so I got a red jacked and long sleeved shirt
and the yellow Weatherproof Cycling Jacket. The sizes are a bit all over the place, the medium jacket was too small and tight for me so I had to get a large but the medium yellow jacket fitted me perfect.Got the gloves,Cycling Cap and Overshoe Set also. The overshoe set were for size 8-9 but I still bought them as it was the cap i really wanted.Turns out the size 8-9 Overshoe Set fit over my size 11 SIDI shoes so I was very pleased with that.
Does anybody know if any of the stores still have the Cycling Thermal Underwear left?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,538 ✭✭✭nak

The Aldi stuff is ok for the money, wish they did the merino base layers in a cycling cut. Don't know why they don't stock all the items in size small and not just M-XL though? Didn't get anything :(
