    Hi,

    I was at my first seminar today as a PhD student and I came across two things that I'm unsure about: In a diagram of a molecule, I noticed a PtBU2 group and a NEt2 one. Bu and Et obviously aren't chemical elements, but what 'sub' group do they refer to? Is the first one Platinum diButylide or something...?; and is the second one Ethidium with a Nitrogen attached?

    Here it is:

    yeh, you get a lot of this, Et = ethyl, Bu = butyl and the little letter n s or t in italics tells you what isomer. There is probably a list of these, if I come across one i'll let you know...

    Excellent - thanks. I couldn't find a thing about it on the web, but I only search for ~2 minujtes (that's the amount of time I get, being so damn busy).

    There's usually lists of these abbreviations at the back/front of any chemistry book. Others include:

    Me = methyl = CH3

    Tf = triflate = CF3SO3

    Shorthand, similiar to skeletal diagrams.
