Yep, you can - but if the car is the subject of an insurance claim, then the tax belongs to the insurance company.

The car has been deemed beyond economical repair and insurance company has paid out on it.

    Who owns the car now?

I dont know, I would imagine the insurance company. It isnt my car, my friends. But he gave the log book to the insurance company a few weeks back, and he received the end of life cert the other day.

Logbook needs to accompany any application for refund of road tax.

I had a car written off last year that had been freshly taxed for a year. The insurance company took the cost of the tax into account when valuing the car.

You can only claim the tax back if there is more than 3 full months left on it.
