Hi just wondering now that the way things have gone and you need to be renting 6months among other things to qualify for Rent Allowance - can it be done that living back home after 2 years and paying rent and its going into a rent book, does that qualify for renting for 6months? Or do my parents have to be registered landlords and all that? I'm a single mom living back home with a 1 year and things are not working out here being away from home so long and i really do not want to be put on a housing list cause i do not know where i want to settle and i do not like the idea of it. Or is there a way i can get help towards getting RA

    Any help appreciated please.

I was with my CWO today, and the 6 months previous renting has to be in the place you are looking for rent allowance for.
So for example if you want to live in 55 talbot green, you have to be living there 6 months previous before getting R.A.
Also the CWO told me, you have to be out working for those 6 months, paying taxes etc. which obviously you would have to be as you couldnt afford to rent a place for 6 months otherwise. I believe this whole 6 month renting rule has just come in because of the rise in unemployment and its mainly directed at them. Not lone parents.

The only option especially for single parents is getting on the housing list. How long is the wait for a council house in your area? In my area its over 7 years long. So I went on the housing list a few months ago. Theres no chance of me getting offered a house for years, and I hope to get my life back on track long before then. So in the mean time rent allowance is the way for me.

Just so you know, you dont need both, its 6 months renting the place you want R.A for, OR get on the hosuing list.

    Hi Elliee

Thank you for replying to my question so fast. You cleared up the situation better then my CWO did!
I understand about the RA and renting the place bit i mean i could rent the place it just meant every penny would go on that and food, that would be my OPF weekly and CB going into the renting and bills and wouldn't really be able to afford anything else after bills if even being able to pay them. Its no life having to borrow money to do that! But in what you are saying i couldn't even do that if i wanted?!?
Re the housing waiting list i have no clue, i am currently living in a Village outside the City and i wouldn't imagine the list is that BIG, where do i find this out? I have the papers here so will fill them out, its just not the route i had hoped to go down. But with childcare costs and no jobs its hard to work.
Thanks again and i hope you get sorted soon yourself :)
