I'm actually not sure if we can discuss that here. However, the process is widely known. Google is your friend.

DVDFab does a very good job of it.

I'd suggest DVDFab to rip, and then Handbrake to convert to avi.

What are you ripping it for? Watching on a portable device (Archos etc) or your computer/HTPC ? If its your computer, you'd can get much higher quality these days than Xvid. I rip all my DVDs to HP H.264 these days, and use the mkv container.

If it's just AVI then DVFab is all that's required. (You only need Handbrake if you want H.264 in an MKV container at Level 3.0 or higher.)

I didn't say Handbrake was or wasnt required. I said I recommend it.

Its better for converting than DVDFab imo, and its free, with no expiry. Unlike DVDFab (30 day trial). However the freeware version of DVDFab is fine for simple ripping, and doesnt expire. Hence the split recommendation.

Eh you do for commerical DVDs, you can't copy them unless you use something like DVDFab.
