My first learners permit has just expired and I need to get a second one. My problem is that the office of motor tax closes at 3:30 and I don't finish work until 5:30.

Does anyone know if I can post all information needed to the office of tax or do I have to go in person?

make sure you include your old licence, sign the two pics on the back, include the fee, and double, no triple check everything on the form is filled in!! it's just if you forget something it's time consuming to have it returned to you and have to post it back in :)

I've heard you can send someone else in with the form for you, which makes sense, if you can post it then why not. But on the form it says you might me asked for ID! Anyone know any more about this?

Do you know if you are allowed to drive if your first provisional licence expires before your second is sent out to you? Say there's a 2 week gap or so?

I presume that if you can apply by post, then surely someone else can hand in your application if all the right documents are there. If they handed out the licence then and there it might be an issue. But it would be posted to your address, so it should be fine. Though that's my logic, might not apply to the wonderful world of local authorities/ tax office

Well ideally, you shouldn't be leaving it till it expires to renew it. You can renew it any time in the last month (or maybe three, I'm not sure) of its validity. But that's another issue, if you do leave it then there's three different periods to consider.
    1. When your permit expires and your application is still in the post (or on someone's desk in the tax office). At this point you have no licence and shouldn't be driving.
    2. When your permit has been processed and is in the post. Now you have a permit issued but shouldn't really be driving until you have it in your hand, so to speak. There's a bit more leeway here.
    3. When your permit has been delivered - this one explains itself!
But these are all technicalities that wont really come up unless you're stopped and get cheeky with the Garda, or if you're in a crash or something. :)
Though that's my logic, might not apply to the wonderful world of local authorities/ tax office
If it were a logical system, it wouldn't have caused the confusion in the first place. ;)

    Have a quick question here.

I'm just back from England and my first license expired last month so I have to go for the permit. Thing is I'm not driving can I leave it awhile say till November then apply and my license will last till November in two years time?

Thanks! Sent in my application a few weeks ago, but something got lost along the way! The Council have me on the system as processed but I never got my licence! Now the expiry date of the one I have now is looming:mad:
