Going from Eircom to UPC

I've been with Eircom for a few years (3 I think) so I guess I'll be out of any contract obligations. But is there anything I should know about changing over?

I was thinking of calling UPC and waiting until I'm hooked up before leaving Eircom. This way I should avoid downtime – if there's a long wait for connection. Does anyone know how long it takes to get UPS installed? (when we moved in we said to no to NTL – the guy came and pulled the wire off the wall outside)

...and how long between the day you cancel Eircom and the day they stop charging you?

I think eircom's notification period is 28 days.

I ordered UPC online, picked an install day the following week, and they came and set it up, on time. I've heard many a horror story about technicians not turning up for appointment after appointment though, so do be wary of that.

Order, wait for the install, then cancel eircom. You'll have a 1 month cross-over period where you pay for both, but the alternative is possible downtime. Depends which you want less.

If you're getting UPC phone line, and porting your phone number from Eircom to UPC, you MUST NOT cancel your Eircom phone service. Porting the number could take from 1 to 4 weeks! UPC will provide you with a temporary phone number until porting is completed (You'll receive a letter stating the date for the switch over). you'll have from 1 to 4 weeks overlap in services.

On the other hand, if you don't want your phone number to be ported, then just cancel your eircom service the day the UPC is up and running.

For broadband it's a different matter. What I did my self is I kept my Broadband with BT until the UPC one was installed and running, then I rang BT the same day and cancelled it. So there was only 1 day overlap in servcies.

    Hope this helps.
