Poor servicing by main dealer?

My car started stuttering badly, it would hardly go, and loosing power. A local mechanic had a look and told me that coil 3 had gone. He also said that the plugs were burnt out and this is what caused the coil to go. He said who ever had been servicing the car should have spotted the plug situation over time. The car is only two years old and has been serviced by main VW dealers from new. Should they have spotted this? Or would they not be concerned with this during the service?

Most new car have Long Life Plugs fitted now, so the dealer may not have thought they needed to look at them. What type of milage is on the car?

    It's done 60k km.

Was wondering too because the last service didn't feel that great compared to previous ones.

What car, what engine, what year?

VWs are know for the coil pack going - especially the 1.8T. You may get it covered by warranty.

Sorry, it's a 07 Golf GTI, 2L, TFSI engine. Out of warranty a couple of months.

I'm not sure if the coils were affected in the 2.0T, maybe someone else knows.

I'd definitely bring it to a VW dealer (probably the servicing dealer) and see what they say.

Its easy for your mechanic to be wise after the event. Also how does he know for sure that a developing problem would have been visible at the last service? He doesn't.

Also, I have had two plug coils go on cars (not VWs) The spark plugs themselves were not burnt out, they were "genuine" plugs and replaced at the correct intervals. I know because I did the servicing myself. So it looks like coils can fail randomly.
