Project management software

Anyone recommend some basic free project management software?
Looking for something where I can define task categories, set up tasks and assign them to users, assign dependencies between tasks, and split a task into sub-tasks. Not even that worried about setting target dates, etc. though would be a nice to have.
Even better if it's online. Had a quick look at aceproject but that didn't have the subtask thing.

I use a project management tool called GanttProject and would recommend you look at it. http://ganttproject.blogspot.com/

It is free and open source, does not suffer from feature bloat and does a nice job. It is also very easy to use.

It runs on Java. If you type 'java - version' into a terminal this will tell you if you have a java engine installed. If not then you can easily download one from Sun Microsystems.

    Good luck.

This is coming from a .net dev but I recently got Target Process which is free for 1 to 5 users (licences).

Define User Stories, features etc. and break them down into tasks. Includes a free plugin for Visual Studio that will list your open tasks. All in all an excellent package. While not strictly for .net applications it does run on .net so you'll need iis running .net 2.0 somewhere if you want to use it.

Thanks for those, I'll check them out, although the IIS thing could be an issue

Just as a matter of interest does anyone know of an online project management tool? Preferably something with gantt charts.

Zoho appear to do one as part of their online office suite. Haven't used it, but their other apps always seemed pretty decent.

    There's a good few more out there - round-up of another bunch of them here;

More options can be seen in this blog: http://www.timedoctor.com/blog/2011/02/02/43-project-management-software-alternatives

They also mentioned zoho projects and basecamp, two of the most used project management software nowadays. It maybe because of the features they offer. Features and prices vary for every software, so you might wanna check the comparison table located at the middle section of the article. It will show you the various features the software offer as well as the prices.

The article also mentioned another software which works on issues and problems that the alternative software are experiencing.

OpenProj and Redmine are two project management software packages that are open source but I'm not sure if it has the features that you are looking for.

I use a project management software package called Latitude. You might want to try it too since it has the feature to categorize tasks from its jobs and projects. You can assign tasks to employees in which only those assigned users can do those tasks. Sub-tasks can be made from tasks and they can be set to which dates they have started and ended.

There is a good looking online one here: http://www.teamworkpm.net/

It is developed by a company in Cork.

    I'm a big fan of TaskJuggler - http://www.taskjuggler.org/
Sadly it seems to have been dropped from the standard unbuntu repos :(

Its approach is a little different but I found it worked very well.

If you are more into Agile PM then Trac with some plugins looks very usable... for example the Agilo project (http://www.agile42.com/agilo/).

It's not really PM but another interesting project for helping yo9u organise yourself is ThinkingRock http://www.trgtd.com.au/index.php.
