We are planning to head anywhere in Europe (apart from the 3 valleys ) on the 26th Dec to 2nd Jan

We just want a cheap budget trip as were off to 3 valleys in Feb - would be happy with flight basic room and snow

Reckoning if we can get flights and accom for about 350 sterling would be perfect as were gonna fly from London as better choice of destinations than Dublin

Whats the best deal you got and do you reckon we are dreaming if we think we can get that

Anyone any experience on booking say Christmas eve and going on Stephens day ?

How ya get a late deal..I have no idea !

We are considering Slovakia but without Sky Europe flights are about 200 return

A lot depends on what sort of resort you are looking for. If you want to go somewhere with good skiing, or half decent resort, then forget it. Book early. That is the busiest week of the year pretty much. You may get lucky, but I wouldn't count on it.
However, if you are happy to go anywhere (Bulgaria, Andorra etc.) then you might get something.
Go to Gatwick with you bags packed and announce yourself to the various tour operators saying that you want to go on stand-by. Go early though as lots of pople do this. You will probably get something because there are always people who don't turn up or canel at last minute.

Flights from Dublin to Geneva alone were €350 last New Years.

This New Years falls perfectly for everyone as its a Saturday to Saturday (26th to 2nd), no extra days needed to take off work etc and the tour operators love Sat. to Sat. as we all know.

Not knocking your idea but if your hear of anything post it up.

I'm also going away that week and I expect it to be busy.

I have posted this elswhere on the forum allready but a heads up Travel Operators have booked less rooms this year (Courcheval has had 40% of its chalets Mothballed this season)

Last minute deals are going to be few and far between this year as there is less availability.

That does not mean that they wont exsist but last year was the year for cheap deal and dont think the prices will match up this year for low fare hunters.

Do you think this would make arriving at a resort with nothing booked might make bargains from the accommodation providers themselves more freely available?

No idea Leo but I think it will be well worth trying to get in touch with Hotels direct.

All ski resorts that I've been to in the last 10 years have their own online accomodation booking service, and that is where is nearly always get mine sorted and always get good deals.
Watch out for things like if linen and final cleaning are included if you are going for self catering and what's the deal with parking and picking up keys if you arrive during unsocial hours.
Other than that you can't go far wrong with booking via resort accomodation websites.

Considering that new years is THE most popular week of the year, and that EVERYONE will be looking for a cheap deal then, I'd say the chances of snapping up cheap flights or a cheap apartment is very unlikely

I once got a week's half board and flights for 149 euro, but it was mid season, at the very last minute, and I had no idea where I was going. The way the deal worked, you knew what country you were going to, and that was all. But there had just been a huge dump of snow, so I was prepared to take my chances. I ended up having a very good week in Valmorel.

If you have a specific time slot, it's unbelievably chancy waiting for a late deal. Yes, they may become available, but they might not, so you could be left with no holiday at all.
