Disaster - 2002 hyuandi trajet timing belt went this morning - local garage said could be anything from 1,000 - 2,300 depends on damage (only 430 miles past recommended change date). Looking for advice - worth changing or time to kick it to touch.........

recommended change would have been in 2007.

you're looking at a new engine from those prices.

It's worth fixing, as the car is worthless as it stands.

Same thing happened my uncles sonata at 80mph on the M8.

A new belt fixed it for some reason not known to mankind.

Op--These are notorious for this.Ive seen them go 5-6k before the belt is due.

Whats usually required is a new cylinder head or the old one rebuilt,2 belt, tensioner pulley, idler pulley and a crankshaft sensor and not a new engine.

When I was in Hyundai we used to charge about 1200 for the whole job so if youre getting quotes for around that then thats not bad.

It could work out cheaper if theres no damage to the head (depending on how fast the engine was running)

Find a good independant bloke who has experience with these and you might get it done cheaper.

    Good price.

Just remember the recommended belt changes on these is 36,000 miles but Ive seen them go at 28 or thereabouts.

If it was me Id change them every 26k just to be sure.
