Assuming you are not Polynesian and are, in fact Irish, and you truly want something meaningful, try something from your own culture. The Polynesians would respect you more for it rather than having some goofy thing that might or might not "mean something."
Or you could get something funny and go for a Sylvester and Tweety bird tattoo. Or you could leave your skin unmarked and avoid future embarrassment. Whatever you get don't get a Polynesian tattoo just 'cos its fashionable right now. It'll be with you for life.
Go ahead and slam me if you like... but deep down you know I'm right. the seeds of doubt have sprouted mightily and are plain in the subtext of your post.

Alternatively, you could research on google the different types of patterns / symbols that there are for maori and polynesian tattoos. There are so many different types / meanings that "meaning something" is very vague.

Or you could just get something that you like the look of, which is most likely the main reason you're getting it done.

I plan on getting a maori leg sleeve / half sleeve in the near future, and the symbolic meaning of it doesn't matter that much to me, I just want something that I, and possibly others, like the appearance of.

For the artists, I (On Will's behalf) will recommend the Italians in Art Tattoo in Temple Bar, I haven't heard anything of them bar Will's recommendations, but he's a reliable source so I can pass it on! Plus, he has an awesome looking maori piece on his stomach / ribs.

    this is nonsense imo

Aesthetics is a fine reason to get a tattoo is you wish.
Even asthetics aside, does the same apply to all the tribal, japanese, chinese, american etc style tattoos that most have
