Hello all first time to boards and i hope somebody out there might be able to give me some help. I attended an evening course 3 times a week for 2 years which cost me about 7k in total for the two years. However this year at work applications were invited for refund of college fees on sucessful conclusion of the course. I submitted an application in time with results and receipts attached. After 2 months I did not hear anything. I contacted admin who informed me my application is lost (all original transcripts) and now it looks like i will not be able to apply for another 12 months. Is there anything I can do????
    Thanks in advance

Sorry, the above isn't too clear. But here you go.

Applications were invited, but you seem to indicate that you had already been on a course, please confirm?

If application were invited, did you need a specific management approval, or handcuff arrangement in your contract of employment, as a foal for education and training, please confirm: 1. The level of approval required; 2. Did you have approval to ex post submit your expenses; and 3. Did you keep copies of the receipts and transcripts?

Confirm why you have to wait 12 months?

Now, this is not legal advice.

On www.revenue.ie there is a form called a T31 form which allows persons claim tax relief up to 1270 Euro per annum for approved courses which are paid for by yourself. This must comply with annually approved college or post grad courses. Most qualify as far as I know. Now, of course this is below the level expected in terms of full reimbursement of fees, but you might consider my queries above and let me know what you think in relation to each.

I personally have found that it can be more beneficial not to have conditions loaded into your employment conditions and take a cheque back from the revenue commissioners, if approved.

That's all I can offer you at the moment.

    Tom

The scheme has been in place for years. Once a year application are invited and Prior approval is not necessary and fees can be retrospectively applied for. There are is a handcuff type arrangement but that is only binding once in receipt of payment. Payment is sanctioned by management however prior approval is not a bar to making a claim. No copies were made of the transcripts as only originals would be accepted as proof of sucessfully undergoing the course. I will have to wait 12 months again as The application was suppose to be forwarded to head office of the company, however my application never left the branch of the company i was working for, so the application never made it within the require window of time to be approved by head office.

Grand. Sure is the answer then not just a practical one? Resubmit it, make a note of the dates of submission to the unit in question, persons spoken to etc. It's a pain in the ass undoubtedly but you'd have little option and they have admitted losing them too, so you'd have certain grounds to apply for an exception etc.

Not to be construed as advice, more practical steps to resolve.

I spoke with an offical in head office who informed me that due to the late date of submission and the fact the money has already been allocated that it is likely my application would be rejected, with no opportunity to appeal.

    Thanks for your help Tom

Seems like their mistake, be formal, write it down. Be nice too and you might be lucky.

Been keeping a record of who and when i was talking to. To be honest I think that clerical error has just cost me 7k, but who knows like you say might get lucky. Thanks again for your help.

Just received confirmation from head office, that the application was rejected on the grounds it was not submitted within the timeframe allowed.
