There seems to be a fine line between these two.How do you define one from the other?

Cocky people will say they're confident, but confident people don't need to

Confident: "Oh yeah I know how to do that, I'll help you with it if you want".
Cocky: "You're doing it wrong, here, just hand it over".

One is me, the latter will always end up and "ex" something or other!

For me; Confident is knowing what to do

    Cocky is thinking you do.

Cocky people act like they have something to prove to the world. They need to be validated, and constantly need reassuring. Not nice to be around.

Confident people are easy to be around. Confidence comes naturally.

Mind you, people call me either cocky or confident. I think your opinion of the person anyway decides on what you percieve this to be.

I know for me, people who don't like me would describe me as cocky, whereas those who do would call me confident?

cocky is writing cheques your ass can't cash.

    confident is silently cashing them.

Confidence is normally based in a history of work, practice and known ability.

Cockiness is normally based in someone's opinion of themself.

Disagree. Ronaldo's a cocky so and so and he generally delivers the goods. Leyton Hewitt was a cocky fcuker and when he was at his peak he cashed plenty of checks. Same for almost every American sprinter over the past 20 years. Cocky people are sometimes very good at what they do. They're just way more annoying than the confident ones.

Confident is knowing your abilities and strengths, never apologizing for what you do well, and being strong enough to go out and get what you want.

Cocky is being an a**hole about it.

I'd disagree there's always a fine line - confident people also tend to be self-deprecating and quite comfortable with a bit of humility.

Confidence : "The habitual voyeur of what is know as ... Park life :P"

Cockyness - is saying that line with arrogence ;)

I agree with Dudess, I know a lot of people that are quitely confident, they are just comfortable in themselves or with doing the task at hand.

Unfortunately I do not believe that being cocky automatically means that their belief in themselves is misplaced. It's all about ego and narcissism with cocky people.

confident people can take jokes laugh it off and laugh at it and enjoy being around and helping people
cocky people are insecure and get all defensive and want the lime light
