    hi,

I noticed on another thread that there are a few cyclists and im hoping they can answer some questions:

    Where is the bike rack?
    Where do you shower?
Where do you store your trainers/towel/raingear?

Im used to cycling into the city but i dont have a clue about the above inside campus.

    thanks in advance

For those that don't have access to departmental shower facilties the sports' centre is your best (possibly only) bet to get a shower and dried off after morning cycle. Most undergrads have access to lockers to store books, bags, laptops etc. but you have to queue up in freshers' week to get one (it's not guaranteed). The arts building and the science building have a supervised, ticketed cloakroom you can throw the helmet and all that gear into as well. Most post-grads will have access to a office which they can lock.

There's a few bike racks around campus. To be honest it depends what course your in and where your mostly based. They're not the most secure in the world, just use a decent lock(s). The old policy applies: if the bike next to yours is easier to steal, the scumbags will probably just go for that instead.

Honestly don't know what the story is with showering. There are showers in the sports centre, and unless its changed you should be an automatic member. Not sure about anywhere else

I always kept any gear like that in my locker, or just in my bag. Maybe try get a locker near these mysterious showers if at all possible

Bike racks are all over the place at the Hamilton end of college - there are fixed hoops at the Science Gallery entrance, ordinary racks by the side of the Lloyd building and other racks scattered about the place. Not sure about the front arch end of things.

Showering after ten minutes on the bike would seem excessive, so I can't help you there :D

Raingear and such could be handed into the cloakroom in the Hamilton, or you could go for a locker there.

Your best bet in terms of bike rack is the one on the Pearse Street side of
Botany Bay. You need a student card to swipe in, so it'll give you that extra piece of mind. Although most of campus is reasonably safe, there are still plenty of bikes robbed every year.

As for showers, I'd say the sports centre is your only option here, most departments won't have any facilities, and unless you know people living on campus, the sports centre is the only real choice.

Lockers, as AlanSparrowhawk mentioned need to be queued for, however, it's not during Freshers' Week, it's the following monday when lectures start at the reception inside the main entrance to the Arts Block.

How does everyone else wash their cycling gear? I put them on a half load coolcycle at 40 degrees with half a persil cake then put them on the radiator to dry.

I visited this place at the end of last year, after reading about it on here several times...the gate was propped open with a brick, and inside it looked like a bicycle graveyard...with bits of rusted wheels etc tied on to the few racks.

The security hut is nearby there, but to be honest, I felt better leaving the bike elsewhere.

Like Ron says, most places are safe, just make sure if it is a decent bike you have good locks. I leave 2 locks on the racks outside the library, and carry the third with me...and have had no problem for the past year.

I once left my bike locked with a very basic u-lock outside the International Office in Front Square for 3 months and got it back in perfect condition and not-stolen.

I used to leave my bike locked up underneath the Pearse St. dart bridge but not anymore.

I locked it up one Sunday and came back to get it around 6pm. A bunch of scumbag kids (10 - 14yo) were walking about looking at the bikes. Security turned up 5 mins after the kids left saying that they had been casing up bikes to steal.

After that I've always locked it up beside the Dentistry building on the way to the Pav. Security desk is right beside it so there are never any problems. One bike has been there for at least two years and no one has ever touched it.

    Sad, but true.

What dept. are you in? I normally lock mine under the stairs inside the LLoyd and have showered a few times in the basement of the LLoyd.

technically your not supposed to bring bikes into the lloyd...though they used to enforce it far more stringently than they do these days.... (People do the same wrt locking bikes under the stairs in the ORI)

...might be a question better suited to the cycling forum, no? I would normally go with whatever is the coldest the washing machine does, 30degrees in my case...though that can mean hand washing some stuff if they actually have some stains on them(assos hand washing stuff is supposed to be good for this)....

if your cycling in lycra i'd be quite carefull about leaving them on a radiator...could melt them if it gets too hot...
