Below is the information for this years 24 hour comics day, we're running a bunch of kids comics workshops this year and looking for any websites that parents check for afterschool type activites. The event is totally free so we rely on using the internet to get the word out there and as I don't have kids I'm not sure where is good to post information for parents to hear about the event and what we're offering for kids this year.

24 hour comics day is an annual celebration of comic books and comic book art. The 2009 event is part of the annual Children´s Book Festival run by Children´s Book Ireland. As such we have added a series of workshops about comics aimed at kids. There are several different workshop so there is something for every age group. Below is a list of the workshops taking place. There will also be a reading table featuring comics from different countries, a mini comic table selling work by local comic book artists and an anthology on sale printed just for the event featuring work by local and international artists.

The event takes place at the central hotel dublin from 11am on Saturday 17th of October until 1pm on Sunday 18the October and is 100% free for all. More information can be found at our website www.irish24hourcomics.com

All the workshops take place on Saturday 17th of October and work on a first come first serve basis, please email info@irish24hourcomics.com for more information or to book a place.

For children aged 7 and under, at 11.30 am there will be a giant free-for-all comic jam, with kids working together to draw one big giant comic story that will be cut up into sections so everyone can take a piece home!

Maeve Clancey, animator, illustrator and designer, will be running a pop-up book workshop, aimed at ages 6 and over, starting at 12.30 pm. For inspiration, Maeve will have the rough pages from Lisa Hannigan’s ‘Lille’ video to illustrate how designs are worked out in miniature before making the final pieces. By the end of the workshop, each person will have their own pop-up page built and ready to take home.

At 2 pm there will be a workshop for children aged 8-12 years, with Dublin-based comic book artist Phil Barrett and Derry-based comic book artist Bridgeen Gillespie, in which kids will each get to make their own 7 page mini comic.

At 3 pm and 4 pm, in conjunction with International Manga Museum, Kyoto, mangaka Tsuyoshi Ogawa will run a drawing workshop, to show how comics are produced in Japan and what it is like to work as a manga assistant. Participants will get to try their hand at inking with nib and brush. The 3 pm workshop will be for kids (children under 10 need to be accompanied by an adult) and the 4 pm event is geared at teens & adults. Ogawa-San and his translator will be around to answer any questions on manga that people might have after the workshops.

Next up at 5.30 pm Sarah McIntyre, children´s book illustrator and creator of Vern & Lettuce for the DFC, will be running a workshop for those who would like to create truly hideous beasties, and reading from her new book "Morris the Mankiest Monster”. Sarah will also be doing a signing and reading in Waterstones Jervis St on sunday 18th at 2pm.

And to round off the day’s scheduled events, at 7pm older teens and young adults will be welcome to attend The Comic Cast session with Irish comic creators focusing on getting started and how to self-publish in print and on the web.
