I don't follow what you mean?

We cannot allow any medical advice on this forum although we permit medical discussion.

For medical advice, your first port of call is always your GP.

Where there is a grey area, it is at the moderators discretion to allow some discussions and to restrict others. This is why we lock threads rather than ban users on this forum because it is sometimes easy for people to inadvertantly make that mistake.

The bottom line is there is a lot of misinformation on the internet, we do not want to join this crowd - but still allow meaningful discussion about biology and medical issues.

I apologise if this post constitutes 'back seat modding' (I'd never heard the phrase until recently, and am not 100% sure what it means!)

OP, are you referring to this thread? http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055676912

The first difference between your thread and the other two is that in both other cases the OP stated that their GP has been made aware of the problem.

Secondly, regardless of how the question was posted originally, both of those threads have become a discussion of people's experience rather than an 'asking for and receiving advice'-type situation.

Thirdly, and most importantly, your question is about the side effects and dosage of a medication that is unlicenced in this country, and that has been recommended to you by the ubiquitous 'some one'. (Funny how many times we hear "someone said I should try..." in the pharmacy.) The correct place to ask for this information (dosages/side effects) is in your pharmacy, where you can get free advice without an appointment. Your pharmacist will be able to advise you about Melatonin, but will not be able to supply it to you without a prescription. Also, (as far as I know off the top of my head, but until I can double check I'm open to correction on this) Melatonin can only be prescribed by a specialist or consultant. There are reasons why certain medicines are restricted in their supply, and those reasons are for your safety.

Mods; I apologise if this post is treading on your toes.

ps. It is also important that you DON'T try to obtain Melatonin through the internet. Apart from the fact that it's illegal, and the major health risks that are posed by unscrupulous hoaxers/fraudsters/counterfeiters, the package will be confiscated by Customs if they suspect it contains medicines.
