Getting to Westendorf

Just trying to plan the trip for 2010 and the route I've taken for the last few years has gone away :( so I need to work out a new one.

We used to fly to Amsterdam on Friday, get the train to Utrecht/Rotterdam and then get a sleeper down to Austria, arriving right in the resort somewhere between 0800-1000, ready for a day on the slopes while the Ryanair/Aer Lingus brigade are either experiencing the hell that is Dublin airport on a winter Saturday morning or fighting to get through the hell that is Salzburg airport on a winter Saturday morning, still with a 2h+ drive ahead of them and having been up since 0300.

It took longer than flying 'direct' but for a family of 4 we saved a good €600-800, and we got to have a few drinks in the bar car the night before without a care in the world. All we had to do was wake up and get off the train right in the resort. We also got to ski for the full day (more or less) on both Saturdays as the train didn't leave till 2100 or something. That makes for 8 days on the slopes instead of the usual 6 day Sunday-Friday that you get squeezed into.

Unfortunately the train company we used in previous years - http://www.berglandexpress.com - went bust. This happened 2 weeks after we had come back with them so we were lucky.

I'm wondering whether anyone has any other interesting options for getting to Westendorf that doesn't involve selling the first-born for a seat on either EI or FR at the very start of the day or very late in the evening ?

I'm going to look at flying to Munich on the Friday and getting the train down on Saturday. We did this before and it worked OK, but if anyone has any other options please let me know.

I know that technically this is more of a travel post, but I thought I would try here first as there might be some interesting suggestions here.

    Thanks,

    z

Looks like flight prices are actually down a fair bit this year. Last year, for a family of 2 adults, 2 children DUB-SZG was between €2,200-€2,600 for the mid-term week with either Ryanair or Aer Lingus.

This year, before luggage and booking charges it's between €1,400 & €1,700. Hmm, food for thought there.

Why travel Sat to Sat? Go midweek and you can get fares for practically nothing. The dearest I have ever paid for a return flight with baggage has been €100, have got some for less than €50.

The constraint here is that the kids are in school. Yes, we could take them out, but we prefer not to. We're already catching up on the school brownie points after taking them out for a month to go to China last year.

I would obviously prefer to do it midweek and save money, or go a different week, but that's not an option at the moment.
