Hi, just wondering if anyone has any idea what kind of cost to respray an old beetle, the paint work is perfect just want to change the colour, so wouldn't need to be a bare metal respray......

    Thanks:)

............must be one of the new Golf based ones ! :D

To be honest asking any internet group that question isn't going to get you an accurate answer, even a ballpark could be way off.

You need a bodyshop quote so the simple thing to do is try to find one near you who will work on classics and give you a quote.Even then they will have to disassemble, which may not be straight forward, and prepare the paint properly, again this may show up issues.

Where are you base and we'll see if anyone has a contact nearby.

In Dublin I suppose it would be Emilios, but that wont be cheap, it'll be good, but not cheap.

Minimum of a grand for a reasonably good job.

I would have said a minimum of a grand and a half for any kind of standard and that's assuming there's no rust repair to contend with. There is of course only one way to find out.

    I had that flashback too.

What a coincidence, both beetles, both wondering about spray jobs with no preparation.

Anyway... Has anybody tried getting estimates from the North for paint jobs? Maybe it's cheaper there

Well if your changin the colour it will be a glass out full strip out job to bare shell which will be pricey enough, no matter how good you think it is when its rubbed down there will be issues to deal with ie dents and ripples, if u dont do a colour change properly and just paint the outside you will have a proper dogs dinner of a yoke with different colours when you open boot etc it has to be all rubbed down undercoated and primed well to have a really nice job !! I can see it costin up to 2 grand tbh

From personal experience with the Mustang it will be more expensive than you think.

The more you do yourself the cheaper it will be. Budget 2k for the paint job at least.

Thats only really the case if you actually know what you're doing. Stripping it down a bit is fine - trying to do any sanding etc can cause more work for the bodyshop doing the spraying!

Would agree with the budget of at least 2k.

Agree totally, leave the sanding to the guys who have to paint it.

Been there , done that..:) massive work involver if u want a car to present
The beetle is actually a joy to work on
I restored a 1974 beetle and it took me 2 years :o but i enjoyed the experience
Everything comes off theres very little welded.. the wings come off easily including all the windows
The major problem area relates to the running boards and ensuring an exact surface to re-bolt the replacements.. also the bumpers , head lights etc.. but its all great fun.. much stronger metal and less rust than say a morris minor. .. back to your question :) the cost .. ahem .. if you cant take a volks apart and put it back together again yourself , u are into mega bucks .. couple of grand at least
