A&E charges

    Folks,

Im wondering if anyone knows what the A&E charges are in UCHG?
I have a suspected broken bone in my foot. The Clinic charges 100 to be seen and 105 for the X ray. But at least you get seen straight away and I think my VHI covers a certain amount of it.

Just looking to compare what the regular A&E charge would be.

I take it you've seen your GP and they've referred you to the clinic?

Are you thinking of attending A&E in the hope of saving money?

I havent seen my GP as I dont think theres any point. He will send me into the hospital for an X Ray either way. I had a retired nurse look at it and she mentioned something may be broken.

Im not trying to save just money, but time aswell. A&E in the hospital can have wait times of up 4 hours. The clinic sees the patient straight away. I was just wondering what the cost in the A&E in the hospital was.

Check out this method. Go to your GP and see him/her. Pay the GP fee then get a referal letter from the GP to have it x-rayed at A&E. You shouldn't have to pay A&E charges then.

Worked for me when my boy fractured his arm.

If you go see the GP and pay him /her €50 /€60 they will refer you to the hospital and you don't pay the A&E charge because your doctor referred you.

You could try sweet talk the receptionist to "have you referred" and save even more money.

Are these not ways to clog up a groaning A&E already when a "suspected" broken bone could well wait?

This is the system put in place by the HSE so you are clogging up the doctors surgery and the A&E. So if that's the way they want it and you are saving money grand. You are complying with their rules.

.... ah, I think that speaks for itself.

If its not an obvious break go and see your gp. You'll pay them 50 or 60 euro. I know its possible in some of the public Dublin hospitals to go straight to the x ray dept with an x ray referral from your gp. You won't wait long and will not have to pay.

If there is no fracture happy days and you havent spent 2 days waiting in A and E to be told this. If it is fractured you will have to go across to the A and E and be seen but at least your ahead of the posse.

Once you have a referral from your gp you do not pay the 100 euro a and e fee

Ive had this suspected broken bone for about 3 months. Its tender to walk on, sorest in the morning or after Ive been off it. Cant play soccer because if I kick the ball it hurts. If I tackle someone with that foot it hurts. Its like a shockwave through the foot and I end up limping away.

Tell that to the retired nurse.:D

I'm not getting at you, op. But if you continued to play soccer, kick and tackle, it hardly constitutes an "emergency" does it?

The bigger picture here is that people, while abiding by the "rules" set down by the HSE, also have a responsibility to avoid clogging up a casualty/a&e/emergency (what are we calling them now?) unit.

Put it off for so long now I have to go and get it sorted. Its annoying every time I go playing soccer, or hit my foot off anything.

O/P after three months the bone should have set by now. Maybe it set wrong, trapped a nerve, damaged a muscle etc. Get it checked out straight away.

If I was in pain as you decribed.....a hundred euro, waiting times, public/private wouldnt bother me. i'd just get it done

Exactly. At this stage I need to get it sorted. I called the clinic, they said to call in after work and they'd take a look. Its better than clogging up the hospitals or the doctors who will more than likely send me to the hospital anyway.

The clinic is good, had the misfortune of being in there more than once!! Quick and the Docs in my experience were great. Best of luck, let us know how you get on.

I suppose you could say you were putting your sore foot on the long finger?

    Hope you get sorted.

Ok so I have no broken bones, and nothing healed the wrong way.
I have tendon and/or ligament damage to the outside part of the foot.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to treat that :(
