Focus is a great car, I had one for 2 years. Would not recommend the 1.4 litre though, it is very underpowered. The 1.6 litre is the one to go for. You should be able to pick up a late MkI from 2004 like this one on your budget:

Aye, the focus is a great car, nice to drive, and a decent size. As said, go for the 1.6. Although i did drive the 1.4 for two years and although it wasn't going anywhere fast, it was still grand. There's plenty to choose from out there seeing how popular they are, so i'd be looking at ones with decent spec.
