I used a spanish slate before and they were very brittle. Looked well when they were done.

Put Spanish slate on the roof of the house and I'm delighted wih them.. look fantastic and I was happy enough with the price I got from a reputable nationwide hardware store

You would need to know the slate size before felting would you not?
