I would advise all of the above, get Sky.

Which may or may not be good advise.

You might end up in my situation, now on week three of trying to get Sky and after hours on the phone to their clueless sales staff.

Or having lots of issues with crappy failing Sky+ boxes.

Or end up paying significantly more for tv, phone and BB then with UPC's bundles.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending UPC's obvious problems, I'm just pointing out every supplier has it's problems and their can be a little of far away fields are greener.

In D2 most channels did pixelate quite a bit during the day (Sunday 13/09/09) which was very annoying, but got better during the evening.

With regards to "crappy" Sky+ boxes, I have NEVER had any problems with either their boxes (from the old analogue, to digital, to plus, to HD) or customer services. Always been flawless. I would still prefere SKY hundred times before "crappy" UPC I'm afraid, but that's just my own opinion ;-)

There are a few UK sites (avforums, digitalspy, etc.) that if you head over to, there are lots of people having major problems with various failing Sky boxes.

I'm personally having a dreadful time at the moment with sky customer service, into week three of trying to get Sky installed and still no viewer card!!!

I believe the loss of signal is called co-chanel interference and only really is a problem when we have high pressure weather conditions. although I may be wrong. Google Co-channel interference and all is explained, wiki is very good

It's down in Stoneybatter. Was down last weekend for about 14 hours (including part of night). Getting more than annoying that each time it happens and I report it, they insist on an appointment to make sure my box is ok when its a bit clear there is a wider issue!

I've had this problem loads of times aswell, I've booked and cancelled appointments about three times now despite the fact I told them my neighbours were experiencing similar outages. They always claim it's only me experiencing a problem even when it clearly isn't.

Make sure every time it goes out you ring and complain and ask to be put through to the accounts department once you have registered your complaint where you can ask to be credited for the days outage.

I have done this many times and always get €10 credited to the bill for each outage if enough people do this and they are paying out enough they might eventually fix the problems with their service once and for all

Good advice. Always upsets me about Ireland that people don't attack in large groups on things like this. I'll make sure to try and get the same. €10 is a bit high though...nice of them to give it! I'm more concerned with how when one reports an outage, you are given an appointment and therefore cancel plans to sit in all morning IN CASE they don't declare an "area fault" and don't actually receive a positive confirmation you don't need the appointment. That said, on two occasions very pleasant UPC staff have rung to update me on the situation. Only once was I left waiting the next day without update.
