    Hi All

Im a bit of a novice when it comes to the stock market, however i am extremely interested in the subject. Im half thinking about doing this course in October, im just wondering if anyone here has done this course and if so how did they find it? My aim is to be able to trade successfully for myself, not as my main income and not so that i can get a job in the industry, its more of a personal interest than having a qualification!

    any thoughts or comments appreciated

DBS runs two of these courses; a beginners and an ''advanced''. As far as I know they both cost EUR1500. Having done the ''advanced'' I would liove my money back.

The material was wide-ranging (touching on a lot of areas of financial markets), however not detailed enough to provide any useful skills. My lecturer was an ex-stockbroker; plenty of interesting stories but lacking the ability/time/inclination to teach technical tools.

If you are not using it for a job then spend your money on an internet connection; find websites/blogs that speak to your style of investing (for example Barel Karsan for value investing, trade2win for technical trading). You will save money and learn much more. Also read LEX & short view on FT every day, Dealbook on NYTimes.

An accounting course (can't reccommend any; just need one that goes through public company accounts/filings) is good for the analysis of investing in public companies. If you are investing in other securities then read their prospectuses/term sheets; understand everything and google anything that you can't.

In Summary: if you want something more from DBS Stock-Broking courses than the qualification (I would assume that anyone that actually hires from this course knows how cr*p it is), then keep your money in your pocket.

Waste of time & money. Just set up an account and get going. There'll be plenty of pitfalls and harsh learning, just as their is with everything in life, but you'll come good then.

Save yourself a lot of money and invest in a few books. I've read the following:
    1. Investing in Shares for Dummines UK Edition
    2. Anthony Bolton - Investing against the tide.
    3. The Essays of Warren Bufftt Third Edition
    4. Dear My Buffet What an investor Learns 1,269 miles from Wall Street
    5. Rich Dads Guide to Investing - (Absolutely sh*t, this was my worst investment of the year)

    Hope this helps.

I would agree with all the advice given on thread..Avoid DBS..With the internet you can teach yourself all you need to know...I read somewhere once that all good traders have a similar education..that is a phD in losses. Sounds about right to me...Anyways the main thing is ur passionate about the markets..Blogs are a good place to learn too..FT alphaville has alot of goof stuff on it..and links to alot of other trading blogs..try get ur hands on a demo platform (dont start trading)..just observe how the markets act and react while ur learning..

Trading on demo accounts is a must for a few weeks and you will learn a lot, But there is nothing going to prepare you for trading your own cash it is completly different IMHO, Best piece of advice I was given was take your losses quick and your profits slow.
Use stops and good money management

Here is a site that has a free course with videos explaining most areas of trading http://www.informedtrades.com/f111/
I sat through all the videos a few months back,
    best of luck
