Yep - I bought a secondhand one, and it works perfectly (not on the Mk I, unfortunately).

It did come as a surprise to me, but it is actually shown in the camera manual on the System Map.

Still have one from my 35mm days - think I bought it around 1993, and yes I was also surprised to find it works perfectly on the 5DII. Very handy too.

The rc-1 has an edge over the rc-5 in the option of 2 or 10 sec delay, and it can also clip onto the neckstrap when not in use. I didn't really like the rc-5, I prefer old school buttons.

One thing I've noticed is the camera drops out of rc mode, I think when it goes into standby. Must rtfm to see if there's a setting to lock that in, if something stupid is happening it's usually my fault :D

One possible reason is that you are using one of the Custom presets, but setting the RC Mode manually. When the camera goes into standby mode, it will revert to whatever you've set in the Custom preset.
