Was thinking of buying a jeep don t have a lot of use for one just always wanted one and there seems to be great value now. My only concern is everyone says how heavy on fuel they are , i would not be towing a trailer and don t drive very hard would be travelling about 30 miles to work, was looking at a vw toureg 2.5 diesel what sort of mileage would i get to the gallon ?

For what its worth Premier Fleet in Ballymount have a load of Nissan Pathfinders and Navaras that they want rid off ( just back off hire )http://www.premierfleet.ie/vehicle/exfleet.aspx

I dont know how much they are but I know they have passenger and commercial versions in various conditions.......and no, I dont work there ;):D....but I know he wants rid. Might grab a bargain.

Ive driven jeeps for the past 6 years for work. Thirsty, bouncy and hard work for long journeys if you get a commercial. Passenger versions are even harder on the juice - more weight.

I have the toureg over 2 years, drives almost like a car, have tried all commercials and crew cabs as i can claim vat back but wouldn't touch them too agricultural, noisey bouncy etc. Q7 nice drive but €€€

Staw away from LR (especially older ones) and Jeep for a start. I wouldn't contemplate the cheap fakes either (kia etc). Can't go wrong with a well serviced cruiser (injectors on the 120 can cause probs). If Pajero then don't go for the 2.5. If troopie then steer clear of the 3.1. Can't comment on Touareg but I've heard vag are suffering from reliability these days.

Mileage will be poor on full time 4x4's and tax will generally be high. My amazon does about 25. My RRS did 30 after a remap. My old Prado did 27. But it's great throwing them about and not worrying about the roads.

    hth. have fun.

..we just got rid of a SWB Landcruiser at work, we didn't nickname it 'The Bouncy Castle' for nothing !

Mid 20's mpg, excellent at towing. Clutch twice the weight of a truck. (And I'm comparing it to a Scania...). Puke-inducing ride though. Awful.

....still trying to think of why anyone buys them.......

    Better idea: Transporter 2.5Tdi LWB.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Grey area, what do you want? a "Jeep" type vehicle, ie a large off road type vehicle or a large "car"? Do you want presence or performance?

Is it for status/protection or for capability? ie ability to deal with less than ideal roads? I suspect the former, if so, its a fashion parade rather than anything technical and will probably be sorted by the nearest dealer than can offer you the requisite metal and back up, the brand is irrelevant.

    Good luck & enjoy.
