Tyre recommendation for winter (rear tyres, RWD)

Can anyone recommend me a tyre with a good compromise between price/quality for the rear of a 320d. Had Kumho 'Ecsta Spt' on them previous to this (summer) and never had any hairy moments - don't know if I should change tyre brand for the winter?

If anyone can make any recommendations i'd be greatful, willing to spend about 150euro per tyre, wheels are 225/45/17

just one note ...if you are considering proper winter tyres, you really should change all four tyres. Summer tyres front and winter tyres rear would result in pretty awful characteristics on slippery roads

Very good point peasant, however think i've got winter tyres on the front as it was winter when I last replaced them (car had been laid up for a while) and wasn't skimping at the time

they ain't winter tyres

I've never seen dedicated winter tyres on sale here

i'm not sure winter tyres are necessary in ireland - we don't get extreme weather.

I don´t think that there is really need for Winter tyre in Ireland,

firstly all the proper winter tyres, like this one:


or this one:


are proper winter tyres, so good grip in snow and ice. But in same time they usually have issues with grip in wet tarmac or noise.

Maybe the only good tyre to try would be those winter tyres they use in Germany, they are much harder compound than nordic winter tyres and should be better in wet, but not that good in snow or ice.

But all this will be pointless OP, because if you have winter tyres in the back and summer tyres in the front, then most likely you will leave the road anyway because the car will understeer so badly, so I would advice OP just stick with summer tyres.

Thanks for the info folks. Ye're right - rang a tyre guy who I normally go to (Clonboo tyres) and he said to stick with decent summer tyres. He is putting the same Kumho's on that I had previously (never had a problem with them) - sorted

By the way the weather is looking I'd get a decent set of Summer tyres!

There really is no need for winter tyres here. The most we ever get is a few inches of snow or the odd patch of (black) ice

I just thought that winter tyres were for wet driving, not snow. Summer tyres will do the finest
