The state of that passport

Ahem, my passport's been through a serious amount of travelling since it was first acquired 8 years ago and is starting to look seriously worse for wear. With only two years left I don't really fancy the hassle of shelling out for a new one until it expires. It's still machine readable, all visas etc are perfecty legible, it's just the outside cover is stained, bent and well a bit gross.

Anyone know what the story is with how presentable your passport has to be? I know if there were pages hanging out of it I'd likely be to told where to go by customs wherever I travel, but if I stick one of those leather passport covers on the outside, considering all is legible and intact inside, will I be ok?

And also, is there still a kiosk at Dublin Airport that sells those leather passport covers?

    Cheers!

I'm sure you will be fine. They sell the covers in the departure lounge. I don't think they sell them before you go through.

You can get them in the €2.00 shop for......yes you guessed it... €2

On those leather passport covers, going through JFK a few months back there was a sign asking that all passports are removed from any covers/holders before presenting to the officer..............

The 'IRELAND' and 'HARP' print got very worn on my previous passport. When it was less than three years old

I had an opportunity to renew this passport so went for the 48-page version the next time (€18.00). It's alot sturdier, print is holding up after seven years of very regular use. Carried daily for months on end. And it's not likely to fall apart like an earlier passport did and I put back together with some glue.

Unfortunately I don't believe the renewable option is available now, for any applicant looking for the 48-page version may have to pay the full price. I would consider that again.

I was worried about my husbands pasport for our recent trip to Orlando. It was brand new, but the dog had got at it and chewed the cover a bit, the inside was fine though. I bought one of the covers, but was told that it would have to be removed from the cover before going through immigration. As it happened, he was completely fine, they never even looked at the cover (my hubby passed it to him open). I truly think that once it is machine readable and that all the inside pages are ok, then you'll be fine. I'm sure they've seen passports in all sorts of conditions.
