13" screens alright for programming?

I'm doing compsci in college and need to get a laptop. I'm looking for something that's handy to carry from lecture to lecture (and won't kill me while cycling in every day ;)). Anyone reckon a 13" screen would pose much problems when it comes to regular programming use (possibly for several hours at a time)?

Personally I prefer a 15" screen for any kind of long-term use on a laptop. Just more space (assuming its a good res) and more comfortable on the eyes.

But at the end of the day, its just a trade-off (mobility/screen size) you have to decide for yourself. What works for one person might not work for you.

For me I don't find the size/weight difference huge, if I can carry a 13", I can carry a 15". Maybe check some out yourself in a shop and see what you reckon.

I would not develop on anything less than 15" if possible, and preferably I would have a more permanent setup with 1 or two bigger monitors.

From exprience ive learned that 2 monitors will seriously increase your productivity. Think about it, you have possibly Visual Studio, SQL Server Managment Studio, IIS, Graphics packages, email and various other apps open at once. You might not think it but switching between windows really drains your concentration. if you can have 2-3 windows open and in view at the same time, you will be much more productive.

Personally I'd go for the 13" but have it attached to an external monitor when working at home.

13" laptop with 24" external would be a nice setup :)

    Cheers for the replies!

I have the desktop here for working at home, I just need something purely for college and perhaps the odd bit of programming if I'm away somewhere.

Tbh, purely for handiness, i'd be getting a 13" laptop for college. If you've got a Desktop at home for most of your work, and the laptop will only for work "on the go" i'd be thinking portability would take preference. 13" screen is still a decent size, maybe not the best for programming, but a good compromise me thinks.
