Golf problems

    Hi hive mind,

Have a few problems with my 99 golf (tbh that's all i ever had with it, dunno how it's still alive).

    1. It's started making a load screeching like the fan belt is gone, but I've noticed it chugging while I'm driving at a constant rpm. So, for example I'm driving at 2,000 rpm it'll jump between 1,800, 2,000, 2,200. Can anyone tell me if that's a symptom of a fan belt or is the screeching not the fan belt and in fact something else. It's the same story while idling.

    2. My left front wheel was knocking, brought it to a mechanic and the bearing where gone which meant it was loose. He fixed it but now it makes a squeaking noise, fast I go the more often it happens so I'm thinking it might be a buckle in a brake disk or something with the pad? It shudders when I brake too.

    3. Its failed the nct twice on emissions at high revs. Everything else passes with flying colours (was a couple of months ago before problems above). I know it's a common problem with golfs. I was recommended dipetane, will this actually work? Anyone any experience with it.

The car is dying, people are telling me to sell it but I don't want to sting someone else with this crap. I'm just gonna drive it until it's dead (which could be soon).

    Any help super appreciated.

I have a 00 Golf TDI and some bearings in the front had to be replaced fully so maybe that is what you will have to do. I can only comment on that as thats the only problem I have had with it.

You could have gotten a bad knock on that whole corner of the car which fudged up that area in general.

I hope it lasts you longer then you hope!

Stick a new fan belt on it and you will know soon enough if the fan belt was the problem, just make sure the tentsion is correct, new belt would only be a few quid. Sounds like a Air mass meter gone, that would cause the hunting and the emmisions, think they are around €100.00. Get your mechanic to check the brake discs, these could be well worn by now, possibly never changed since car was first sold.
