Right, I need a decent rucksack for my commute to replace my old one. I have a number of requirements, first is one that allows your back to breathe, nothing worse than getting off a bike with a sweaty back. Secondly, there maybe a day or two where I need to carry a laptop with me to or from the office. And finally, there will be the odd day where I'll need to carry a weeks worth of durty commuting gear home from the office so a bit of space is required rather than something slim that will only fit the above mentioned laptop.

    Anyone any suggestions ?

I have a deuter backpack, not the same one, but find it very good. I sometimes carry a laptop also and there's no problem. I've no problem with a sweaty back from it as it leaves a bit of a gap for air to circulate.

Have a good look at teh deuter range, I think there's a few more on here that use them also.

+1 On Deuter. I have the Trans Alpine 28 or 30 and it's great. Expensive but top quality and worth it.

    Gelert.
Have three of them, all very comfy. Differet sizes, and they have a separate panel that can take a laptop.
Got them from camping and outdoor store on Mary St (Capel street end).
    Cheap as chips.

+1 On Deuter, I have this one, totally waterproof excellent backpack, well balanced when loaded...I sometimes carry my laptop on it, plenty of space and does'nt look too big.
