Rumours flying around at the moment -

    http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,26031165-2902,00.html
Battle of the summer festivals begins

    September 06, 2009 12:00am

CONTROVERSIAL rap-rockers Limp Bizkit may perform at the Big Day Out - as the battle of summer festivals begins.

Nine major festivals have announced dates and line-ups for events in, or near Melbourne, from October to February.

Organisers say the market is overcrowded.

The Big Day Out will announce its first-round line-up on September 29. It's strongly tipped to include Muse, Blink 182 and Limp Bizkit.

Limp Bizkit is a controversial choice. Sydney teenager Jessica Michalik was crushed to death by crowds during Limp Bizkit's performance at the Big Day Out in Sydney eight years ago.

A spokeswoman for the Big Day Out said: "The line-up is not totally not locked down, but we can rumour (Muse, Blink 182 and Limp Bizkit)."

However, with other major festivals announced, and most already on sale, the fight for punter dollars has started.

"The market is very congested, very busy and there is healthy competition and rivalry out there," said Jason Ayoubi, of Future Entertainment.

Future's summer festivals include Parklife, Summadayze and Hot BBQ.

"Reputation of an event will have something to do with how punters will choose this summer," My Ayoubi said.

"Line-up is an important aspect. But so is comfort, health and safety."

He said Summadayze, a New Year's Day dance event, was a key event in Melbourne.

"We really did change the way Melbourne celebrates New Year," he said.

Angus Cameron, who runs Pyramid Rock Festival on Phillip Island, said competition was fierce.

"The pressure is on to organise acts nice and early so you can announce in time," Mr Cameron said. "Patrons are pushing as well. They want to know your line-up because the other line-ups are out."

But there are exceptions. Soundwave Festival, pitching a harder alternative roster, said it does not compete with dance and rock festivals.

"It's not competitive for us, because no one is doing what we do on a national level," Soundwave Festival general manager, Chris O'Brien, said.

"For us, the competition comes from having to provide 50 international acts we think people want to see."

A Big Day Out spokeswoman said the festival was happy to announce after others.

Also, Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris are meant to be signing on as well.

I shall of course be attending, for the 4th time.

The first announcement on next year's Big Day Out line-up has been released, with the rumoured appearance of David Bowie missing from the list.

Big name acts for the day-long festivals in Australia and New Zealand include Muse, Lily Allen, Peaches, Dizzee Rascal, The Mars Volta, Powderfinger, Groove Armada and Rise Against.

Other acts announced are: Kasabian, Eskimo Joe, Grinspoon, Girl Talk, Ladyhawke, Karnivool, The Temper Trap, Midnight Juggernauts, Magic Dirt, Mastodon, Lisa Mitchell, The Horrors, Bluejuice, Calvin Harris, Kisschasy, The Decemberists, and Tame Impala.

The line-up was released on the Big Day Out's website, ahead of an official announcement at 8.00am.

The Big Day Out takes place at Mount Smart Stadium on January 15.

Lol come on now Brendan, the Muse live experience is fantastic. It'll be my 7th time to see them. Just disappointed that they're playing a festival and not their own gig.

The Temper Trap, who I don't like, and Tame Impala, who I think I remember liking, are pretty big Aussie bands. Anyone impressed with them?

Muse are awful, hate that voice and the keyboards, but they're a big stadium band, you know the way, and they've just release a new album, which I might add, is shite, and the Aussies, what with they're complete lack of taste in music, will more than likely flip out for them. :)

Like Dizee Rascal though, think the UK garage sound is fresh with all the same American hip-hop being regurgitated over and over, I find all the remixes & samples on the new album pretty catchy too.

Spot on. The Aussies have their taste up their hole unlike the rest of the world, the UK and Ireland included, who have ignored them and wouldn't be caught dead seeing them live.....oh hold on....

Nah the Aussie have great taste in music. They gave us AC/DC ffs.

Cant believe such a sh1t line up though.

aussies have a good music scene. loads of stuff like ben harper , JBT, etc, you would NEVER hear on music radion in ireland, which to be fair is pretty crap. when I was in Aus, I listened to a lot of triple J and other specialist radio. good stuff!!

For the record, Muse are one of the best, if not THE best, live acts i've ever seen.
I saw them at Oxegen the year with Daft Punk. Was ragin I could only get to see one of them.

So whats the festival in melbourne? I saw it mentioned New Years but the only event i've heard of is that White one. or whatever its called.

What a heap of sh1te. Calvin Harris and Kasabian are the only ones worth seeing (Kasabian supported Faithless at a gig I was at years back, theyre good).

Sod all that poppy sh1te, roll on Prodigy in March :) Or Carl Cox on NYE. Proper order ;)
