Pitch Invasions at Croke Park

For reasons of safety and insurance etc, the authorities that be seem to be doing their best to end the age old practice of pitch invasions at the end of the big matches in Croke Park.
It seems that they belong to a different era, and no the GAA are faced with the problem of how to eliminate them.
This article seems to suggest fencing in the supporters would be a solution, but i cant see how this would prevent such crushes from happening as the pitch used to be fenced before and it didnt stop the invasions. (Gates would have to be opened to prevent crushing etc)

Are the scenes of men being raised aloft by their supporters upon victory bound for the history books?
The presentation stand on the centre of the pitch that the GAA used for a few years seemed to have a subdued ceremony or something, just was not the same.
What other solutions do you think would help?

€5,000 fines will stop it quick enough.

    To who? The supporters?
How the hell would you enforce that?"Right lads just give us your name and address as you run onto the field there for your fine. All the thousands of ye."

If a spectator gets hurt on the pitch you could automatically deny any insurance claim. Like a waiver on the ticket maybe?
But waivers aren't worth anything in a court and I can't see how you'd stop a claim if some fool broke their leg as they jumped the barrier.

And that would be a minor injury compared to what could happen in a crush!

I cant understand how the organisation (be it the GAA, IRFU, FAI whoever) who run the game would be liable if someone broke the rules (is it a law?) and invaded the pitch only then to get injured.
Obviously the organisation has to do its best stewarding wise to prevent crushes etc, as they are liable for the crowd management to an extent.

As far as i am aware it is not law in this country. In australia it is law and you can be prosecuted for going on the pitch.the gaa has paid out over half a million euro in last 3 or 4 years as a result of claims.(i believe thats the figure i heard),so until its passed into legislation this can continue without any punishment.i also as a gaa supporter and player cannot understand that if someone runs onto the pitch and gets hurt how they can sue.i mean, its your own fault.not the gaa.

The stadium director Peter McKenna was on "Morning Ireland" today and I'm pretty sure I heard something about getting fencing put up again on the hill  I was only half listening!

I always loved the joy of running on the field after the game but after what happened on Sunday the presentation was bit of a farce in the end. I reckon it's time to put seating on the hill!

So install the cause of a crush for safety reasons(well not the cause but a massive contributory factor)
    Christ the GAA are idiots.
Seating on the hill wont happen either cause too many people like the terraces(personally I hate them)

Fines work in other countries so why not here?

Fencing is not the major factor in a crush. It is the idiots doing the pushing that causes the crush.

And how exactly are these fines gonna be enforced if thousands decide to go onto the pitch?

The people pushing cause it but a big fence does contibute since theres no relief for those at the front. No fence or a low wall can be escaped over. Its safer to not have a fence

Prevent people from leaving the pitch. Fine at random and ban them from attending games at Croke Park. People will get the message and you can be sure people wont go on again.

Regarding your point about not having a fence being safer. This is true but it is important to note that if these 'supporters' accepted the rules there would be no need for it.

On another thread a better and more workable solution was mentioned.
All the pitch invaders should have gotten banned!

GAA should have done what was done at the end of Munster match in Thomond and said presentation will not take place until everyone has left the pitch.

A lot of kids not paying any attention but suddenly the crowds turned on them by booing them - they werent long shifting off the pitch

This is certainly possible. Shame them.

listen the only way to stop is to allow it to keep happening until someone gets seriously hurt or worse. Then it'll dawn on people the stupidness of their actions.
The other alternative is too look at TV pictures - identify which areas of the ground they come from - look up the ticket allocations and ban the club(s) from receiving tickets for the following year. The GAA's ticket system will allow them to do this.
Also I believe that the players, the counties and the GAA could do more publicity work to combat this.

Hillsbrough was a terrible thing to happen but the root cause of the problem was not the fencing. It was everyone herded into the same enclosure. Fences are used in stadia all across Europe with no problems.
