    Hello all

I’m a total tard when it comes to nails, I’m a nail biter. I'm going to be an emergency bridesmaid in 4 days and need to sort out my tails, top and bottom!!

Can anyone recommend a good brand and maybe a link to a site that gives good instructions?

Are toenails hard to put on? Also gel or acrylic? Can they fall off? And how do I know what size ones I need without opening all the boxes in the chemist?!

I'd love to get them done professionally but the prices are too outrageous for me as it's only for one day.

Thanks in advance for any help given!

    Hiya,

I don't use the toe ones but I'll tell ya as much as I know about fingernails :)

    I've always used these ones:
    http://whuttadeal.com/pictures/100_4728.jpg

BUT they come in two shades, one of that kind of creamy colour and a pinker colour, I always get the pink shade, looks more like natural nailbeds colour. Also, the ones I use have a fake half moon on the cuticle/bottom end of them, this makes a huge difference to how real they look.

This brand makes others with weird little tabs for applying the nails that you break off after they're on, I hate them ones, stick with the regular ones if you get them, I find the tab difficult to break off.

Make sure you use enough glue to stick it but not so much that it squishes out, if it does have a wipe or tissue ready to mop it up or your fingertips will be ruined with glue.

They give loads of sizes in the pack but I have very long thin nailbeds so I never manage to use the thumb ones, I just try out a nail on each finger first, then shape it with my emery board to fit.

I have worn these for years and always get compliments on my beautiful real nails (:D) so they must be doing something right!

And make sure to bring your glue and a few spares with you, it takes a few goes to know how much glue to use so just be prepared!

    Hope this helps

I use these nails when I wear false nails:

I bend the tab upwards and downwards until it comes away from the nail itself, and then I use my emery board to get rid of the sharp bit the tabs leaves behind. I get the Pink ones.

They look really natural as well.

Yeah I can't use those feckin tab things, end up pulling the nail off or something else equally retarded :o

    +1 for these.

The petite size is perfect and they are nice and short so they arent hard to get used to.

Right, if youre using the nails from the chemist, thats fine- they wont last long and you wont destroy your natural nail.

but you asked about gel and acrylics so i just have say one thing! I know you can buy a kit with all the stuff needed but to be honest - its not worthed. professional nail extensions should be done by a person trained properly, otherwise you can can something very nasty on your nails ;)

I do my own gel nails and never had any problems. It was a bit tricky at the beggining but now i.e. after two years it's as easy as putting a nail varnish on. I've never had any training because of crazy prices for these courses, although I'd love to do one but not sure if it's worth it. Internet is full of information how to do it yourself but it takes a while to manage all the technics. It's all about practise but using high quality products is also important.
p.s. I had my first gel nails done in the beauty saloon by trained technician and they started lifting after only 5days! and for the price I paid I could buy whole years supply of gel stuff if doing them myself.

as a nail technician i would reccommend that you get gels or acrylics as alot of people dont know that the press on nail are the worst thing you could put on your nail!!they pul off two or three layers at a time when you take them off and the dont have any give thus l;eading to your nail coming off if they snap off!!!!

J@utis- Where can you buy gel nail producs online?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 617 ✭✭✭flynnser19

you can get the gel products in any beauty supply shop like sallys salon services, NSI salon services and www.flair.ie
it takes a bit of getting used to and youll need to try different brands to see which one you like. a small tub of clear gel will probably set you back around 30-40euro if its a good enough one.

I buy off eBay. Buy known brands, their products cost more but quality is guaranteed. Currently I'm using OPI Axxium Sculpture Gel together with OPI Axxium Gel Base. Their sculpture gel is fantastic product, it's very thick thus easy to apply and it won't leak into the side of the nail.
I started with the RIO (not 100% sure about the name) gel kit from Argos but I wasn't happy with it and I would not recommend it. I found their UV curing lamp being too weak to cure all gel properly. I bought 36watts UV from ebay instead (CE approved).
Soon after I bought another starter kit from ebay and it was by NSI. It contained a set of little containers of all the stuff you needed together with the instuctions and cost me less than 20eur. Very good product, I would recommend.
I've bought a 3 different size brushes from the book shop and they do job just fine :D

What I have to advise if you decide to buy from ebay is to AVOID all stuff comming from China. And ebay i's overflowing with it. I learnt it hard way. I bought coloured gels set from China - all went into the bin because it wasn't enough colour in them! I bought 12colour nail varnish set for nail art - it all went to the bin too because this varnish had a smell of car spray paint! I bought cheap clear+white+pink gel set from china to practice french manicure but I wouldn't put that on my nails, gels are full of contaminants, disgusting!

Good luck if you decide to do gel nails yourself. It's fun it's easy and it looks fantastic. I never had long, strong and beautiful looking nails in my life. My natural nails are thin, weak and tend to split into layers no matter what I tried to do with them, oils creams, pills - nothing worked. I've had the gel nails on for two years now and not a single problem apart breaking one now on then. And the natural nails underneath grow like mad. I have to refill every week. And I do it while watching my favorite show on the telly and it's Grand Designs :D
