Sligo County Council has said it will not pay out any higher education grants to students until it receives the money up front from the Department of Education.
The move will affect 500 students from Sligo, including 300 first year students.
Sligo County Manager Hubert Kearns told councillors at today's council meeting that late payment for various grants from Government departments was impacting on the council's finances.

He sought approval at the meeting for a temporary overdraft of €10m euro.
A temporary overdraft of €8m was sanctioned at the May meeting.
In July, councillors heard that income for 2009 had been reduced and that the council was incurring increased expenditure due to the number of people retiring.
