got sent an email with the following link....

    www.rte.ie/greatestirishsportsperson

...alot of sporting legends on the list but for me there's no question about it...Tony McCoy gets my vote...consistency is the mark of true greatness, and there's been none more persistently successful at the top of his game then A.P....what ya'll reckon?!

    No Eddie Irvine?
He at least deserved to be nominated.

And a lot of other candidates on that list from Northern Ireland

I picked Padraig Harrington but was torn though. I think George Best or Barry McGuigan may have deserved it more.

Another that deserved a mention I thought but not the win is Steve Collins.

I went for Christy Ring. He is the hurler that all others are benchmarked against today.

For greatest sporting moment: Pakie Bonners penalty save V Romania
So near and yet so far moment: Ireland V Australia Rugby World Cup 1991.

Be honest I think you could have case for all of them although think it will come down to about 6-7.

I went with Sonia. At end of day only for Drugs cheats she would have won another world championship and oylmpic medal to her name.

Sonia all the way for me. Her consistently high level performances over a long period of time puts her above the rest (though Kelly comes close).

Just wondering , leaving all opinions aside, who do you think will actually get the public vote?

Will stars like Sonia and Kelly who compete in sports not extremely popular in ireland get overlooked by people with less impressive records but in more popular sports (i.e. Rugby, GAA and Football and Racing).

My opinion would be that it would have to be an internationally successful sportsperson. That rules out GAA and Rugby aswell to be honest as the game has limited worldwide appeal. Racing shouldnt be considered in my opinion as there is no international worldwide event (theres no world championships for example where all the best horses and jockeys from all around the world compete in every 2-4 years.)

In my opinion the person has to be at the top of their game for a long period of time, which for me would be Sonia or Kelly.

Harrington is very close now in my opinion and he will probably get the vote as his success if far more recent than the two I have named above.

I don't think Brian O'Driscoll deserves to be on that list- I think of all the more modern day rugby players Keith Woods or Paul O'Connell would be much more deserving! Although if O'Driscoll won theres the added bonus of a guaranteed book about it all- "O'Driscoll- from nomination to success, a story of Irelands greatest sporting hero"! :D

It wont be an accurate poll. It will be swayed by recent events. If you list each persons overall achievements, nobody comes close to Sonia and Kelly. Simple as. Those 2 should occupy the top 2 spots.

O I agree with you.. But im just taking into account who people will vote for overall.

I would have those in top 2 if I had top five Harrington would be in there but id put Roy Keane in as third. Love him or hate him he was a leader on the field of play and won everything with Man United. Just my taughts.
