Dublin marathon night out

Just wondering would many be interested in this as I said in a previous thread one of the aims of Boards AC and ART forum is to have a healthy social aspect going on.
Last year there was alot of talk about drinks but it was a poor showing in fairness, people going home and not coming back, so this should be plenty of notice, so where should we meet, what time and should we reserve a function room or space in a pub. Again what you think?

Ah, I thought it was a reasonable showing. Just badly organised (by yours truly ) in terms of how we'd all recognise each other.

Probably best to keep a night out separate from the marathon day itself. Everyone needs to go home/to hotel after the race to shower etc., and even with all good intentions it can be difficult to motivate oneself to go out again.

Maybe we should organise something for the week after the marathon. Maybe the following Friday?.....but this only really suits Dublin-based people, so may be unfair.

I'm organising a room in a nearby hotel so that the pacers can shower afterwards. Perhaps you could do the same and all meet up there afterwards ( 5 minutes walk from finish ).

I'd be up for what the majority want so would be quite flexible, but in Berlin last year we all met up that night of the marathon and had a great night, the athmosphere was electric and I think that athmosphere would be lost by not having it on the same night.

It all depends on the trains home for me and Sungod.
I have not looked into it yet,so no idea what times they are leaving ( if they are even running on a bank holiday )

Sounds like the best plan - it would be good to combine the Pacers after run drink with the Racers after run drinks

(btw HW, have the entry forms gone out to the pacers yet?)

I returned mine 4/5 weeks ago, so they must have!

I would love to go for a few pints after. Shower or no Shower :pac:

I would definately be on for this. I will be staying in Dublin in the Ballsbridge Inn on the Sunday and Monday night. I think a couple hours kip in the afternoon would do me fine and then I would be up for anything:D. I would love to meet as many people from here as possible.

I was probably too keen on this last year and was probably first in the pub straight after the finish abit before 1pm. I stayed for a couple of hours, then headed off. Unfortunately met no one there :(
I "showered" in the pub - took with me a towel wet it and gave myself a good wipe down in the toilets. Felt like a new man.
Up for it again this year though

There's nothing nicer than your first post marathon drink!

Why not just nominate a pub near the finish where you can pop in for a drink after the race? That way, people have a scoop or two and swap war stories. It could also be a handy meeting place for their supporters as well.

I know that the runners world crowd used to meet in Kennedys as you can cheer on your buddies that are finishing with a pint in your hand.

Alternatively, Doheny Nesbitts used to be fierce handy as it was only a hobble away.

I'll be wearing a pained expression and carrying a copy of the Irish Times.:D

I'm drooling and salavating that pint already!

Although, I'll be swamping a load of them this Saturday night. I'll certainly swing by wherever you guys are meeting, might even stay around if its fun!

we'll be around for a few drinks after the race and into the afternoon but probably won't stay on for a late night.... I hate living out in the sticks.

Same goes for me, especially since the railway line collapsed at Broadmeadow.

Certainly up for a few in the immediate few hours after the race (and shower, presuming I can use the branch of my Gym which is in the general area on the day)

    Now that would be handy.
As I'll be staying with a friend on the Northside on the Sunday night, I'd have to go back there post-race and shower and then come back to city centre for meet-up, and then head back to the airport circa 21:00 for flight home. So that would be a bit awkward.

Alternatively, if post marathon drinks were exactly that i.e. in the pub for around 1:00 - 2:00, would the great unwashed be equally welcome :o?

    Is a poll called for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭osnola ibax

I'd like to meet up with u guys but I would have to shower first, in that respect maybe an evening pint might be the better option, get a chance to go and shower and get some rest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,395 ✭✭✭eliwallach

I think there is a divide emerging between those who will be staying in Dublin on the Monday night and those who will be travelling home on the Monday night.

    Can a compromise be reached?

I perfectly understand the wish for a shower, but personally I'm not going to travel all the way back to Stillorgan for a shower, back into the city centre for a few pints, and back to Stillorgan afterwards after just running a marathon. Not that the missus would let be out of the door anyway after abandoning the family to run 26 miles earlier that day. :p

Like eliwallach, it's either unwashed and smelly or not at all for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,462 ✭✭✭HardyEustace

Previously I just had a full change of warm, dry clothes and that did me ok for the time it took to have a few nice drinks after the race.

You're not going to be there all night and it's really nice to have a drink or three after the race if you're up to it.

Yes I will act as middle man and go directly to pub after marathon and stay there till closing :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,378 ✭✭✭asimonov

    classic ART forum stuff :)

At best i'll get to go for a quick pint afterwards and hopefully get to put a few real faces to real names and exchange a war story or two before heading homewards ...so if someone can point me in the direction of a bar where others might be, that would be excellent.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 259 ✭✭goofygirl

I vote for straight afterwards. Mind you, by the time I finish you'll all have had about eight drinks apiece!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,435 ✭✭✭christeb

Agreed, I think we need to go with the stinky / semi stinky (toilet wash down) option. That said, I do have a few friends with city centre apartments, might as well get myself ready for a long one (I'll be asleep by 4pm!!!).

C'mon Xavi, you smell at the best of times :pac: Rest after the marathon will mean not leaving the house again. Smelly post-marathon drinks FTW IMO.

I'm happy enough to go with whatever plan is most popular, just hope my nipples have stopped bleeding by that stage

LOL. I find wearing the HRM strap eliminates chafing altogether.

There's always day time cider drinking in Merrion Sq - I can see it now, flaggins concealed by a goody bag and a couple of dozen foil wrapped souls sharing stories about the Wall, Stomach Cramps and Blisters.

I was on my way to an early-morning race a few months ago and there were two groups of gaunt, skeletal figures roaming the streets at that hour: the elite runners and the junkies. It was hard to say who looked more in need of a good meal and a proper rest...

I would be tempted to meet for a drink straight after but there's no way I'll be getting off the sofa once I get home and flake out.

You should be well used to it having slept with a bivouac full of smellies for a week. :D

Im still toying with the idea of doing the marathon (if I get the PhD in the first week of October) so would love to meet all of y'all for drinkies after :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭ronanmac

Meeting up for drinks is a great idea! Being up from the country :), I've booked into a hotel near the finishing line so drinks right after the race or that night (or both!) sound good to me. I always think a hangover the day after a marathon takes the mind off the muscle pain;)

My worry with meeting up after is that ye all will have gone home by the time I get to the finish line:(

Looking forward to this. Some baby wipes and dry clothes will do the job if a shower doesn't happen. We'll be drunk on two pints.

True you're always a fairly cheap date after a marathon ;)

Just a suggestion that I recieved, we get a room in the Conrad hotel at a cheapish rate, probably a fiver per person and then meet in a pub close to the hotel between the hours of 2 & 5 pm
    http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&source=hp&cr=countryIE&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=0,0,578046844179633959&fb=1&split=1&gl=ie&dq=conrad+hotel+dublin&daddr=2+Earlsfort+Terrace,+Dublin,+Co+Dublin+DUBLIN+2&geocode=16750097987740161566,53.335602,-6.257619&ei=UNOoSoniNtKPsAal_-TLBw&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=directions-to&resnum=1
The Conrad hotel is marked B.
    What you think.

Just to add to Woddle's post, there will be a room in the Conrad for showering for the pacer group, so some Boardsies will be heading there anyway.
