It's in case there is an accident, it'll alert the emergency services that there's a baby in the car.. that's what they say anyway

I think it's just idiots that want others to know about the fact they have a child

So, I guess if these people are going out in the car without the baby, they take down the Baby on Board sign in case it misleads the emergency services looking for a baby which isn't there?
    Smart people.....

Who are "they"? I am sure this is not the case. You think the sticker is going to be intact when the car crashes? It's going to be in the engine block somewhere along with the back seat and some of the passangers.

If you can't think for yourself, as to why somebody driving on the roads, especially irish roads, wants to let others know there is a child in the car... well... I have lost hope for humanity.

It is to alert people to drive safely, think twice about over taking that car on a blind corner, have consideration for that motorist. It's common sence really.

It is to make people think twice when driving. Speeding, driving up that cars arse... etc etc.

As previously posted over in Motors:
    Rovi wrote:
The whole 'baby on board' sign thing (I'm led to believe) originated in Germany where people would put up the sign if they were carrying small children when travelling on the autobahn; in the event of a 'typical' autobahn crash (ie: multiple vehicle pile-up) it was intended to alert the emergence services to the presence of a small person in the wreckage. Being conscientious followers of the rules, the signs weren't used otherwise.
These days of course, the whole world is displaying them all the time no matter whether they're actually carrying a baby or not, so their currency is considerably devalued.

thats doesnt make any sense really, isnt that what the sign posts are for? in that case should i put up a sign saying, elderly grandparent on board, or brother on board??

I am pretty sure it was initially to alert the fire brigade or whoever. Assuming of course that the sticker hasn't been burnt crushed or exploded.
"Baby on board" crap driver, busy yelling at baby, not watching road.
"Babe on board" crap driver, busy putting on make-up, not watching road.
"Bitch on board" crap driver, busy being a bitch, won't let you out.

Forget the baby on board stickers. It is the princess on board ones that make me extra cautious.

    Jealous much...

Here's the problem; every BMW driver thinks every other driver is jealous. Get over yourself; BMW's are a dime a dozen out there. They're all over the place.
I see far, far fewer of my Honda FRVs out there then BMWs. You're not special!

Back on topic, you need to pretty cose to read those stickers anyway!

Madness to do such a thing. Better parking spaces are available if you have a disabled sign at your disposal.

Aye 6-seater MPV's are the boy-racers choice alright. I always get there girls with mine especially when they see the kids' car seats in the back; they get all giggly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 180 ✭✭Last Angry Man

I think they were originally invented (for want of a better word) by the emergency services to allow them to identify vehicles which have kids in them should their be a accident, allowing them to attend to those cars first. Also supposed to indicate if a child has been thrown from a vehicle meaning they will search for the kid and not leave it at the roadside undetected. Problem is nobody uses them right - when there is no child in the car they should not be displayed. the fact that people leave them up all the time regardless, pretty much renders the whole idea useless.

I read of the equivelent as a badge for pregnant women, I do think that that is a great idea. Baby on board is fine as long as it is taken off when the baby is not there.

There was this one time I was getting a bout of road rage and was going to write of my car and risk serious injury by rear ending the car in front of me just for ****s and giggles...but as I got closer I saw the "Baby On Board" sticker and so I just veered across onto the other side of the road instead into an oncoming articulated truck with a big hairy monkey at the wheel.

    God bless that sticker.

I use it to indicate to other females that my sperm is strong. I also have a sticker which denotes the number of camels I have. It makes me a very attractive proposition at the souk. My second wife Buthayna which means of beautiful and tender body was initially attracted to me for these very reasons. I am also known to have the wisdom of a young king Solomon.

On its own not so bad, but when accompanied by those pink and yellow (and lots of other colours to boot) ribbon stickers saying 'solidarity' or 'childhood innocence', i know there are knackers involved.A Hyundai accent is usually the vehicle of choice (no offence to innocent accent owners).

I learned last week that a pink sign saying "Twin Princesses On Board" means the driver will cruise along on the outside lane of a dual-carriageway doing 45km/h while chatting on his mobile and turning back to shout at his twin crotchfruit in the back of the seat while swerving into my lane.

The worse ones are "little person on board" Jesus. I half expect to see snow white at the wheel and little pointy hats in the back window. I dunno, all too often I've found those with baby on board stickers and the like are so amaaaaazed at their ability to reproduce they think they're the first to do it. Fine, good for you, but you know, perspective, we all come from generations of people who did it easily enough thanks very much. Then again I don't get the whole babies thing so.....

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Err, don't forget the fact you feel less guilty parking in a parent and toddler space, without kids in the car.
