Difficult scenario

    Hey folks,

I got some good news this morning, but it also makes things very very complicated for me.

I am on jobs seekers allowance. I am due to move house next week. I applied for a night time course recently (higher certificate), 2 nights a week. The college rang me thismorning saying it was upgraded to a degree course and will be fulltime. I will still keep my social welfare. Thing is... I cannot afford to commute every day.

I can rent a house in carlow and claim for rent allowance (What % is that of the rent you pay, anyone know?). Everything is fairly ok that way. Except for my girlfriend. We are living together now, and if I take this course and move, we will be apart for most of the week. That's managable though.

The house we were supposed to move into is owned by my dad. My dad is an arsehole to say the least. He makes everything so fcuking complicated. I am fearful of moving to that house, what if social welfare say that I am not entitled to anything because I am renting from my dad? My dad says to say nothing to social and "pretend" that he is not my dad. Why do parents come up with such stupid ideas? Really, he thinks this will work, at the same time I rather not lie about it. He just won't give me any details, prsi number, bank details, anything. He is a paranoid freak like that.

If I am living in dublin and going to college in carlow, I will have to sign on at least every week I would think, this would put a huge hole in my day for college. I doubt the social welfare office would be leniant in my case. I also have some mates in carlow that I could stay with one or two nights a week to reduce my petrol costs.

The rent is 250 a month in my dads place, it's 240 a month now. It's not like he is doing me a favour or anything.

Would social welfare cut me off if I rented from my dad? This is a big fear of mine, if they do I am completely 100% screwed.

    What do you people think?

You need to ring Social Welfare and ask them exactly what is the situation with signing on if you are in full time education, and also about the rent allowance/accommodation situation. You dont need to give your name when you ring them - just say you're making a general enquiry as you're thinking of going back to full time education.

This was supposed to be a part time course, but due to lack of interest, it has been joined up with the full time course. The course director said it's all legit and I will still get my social welfare. The people in the welfare office aren't smart enough for this kind of problem, really. Especially in carlow. Thick as ditch water. Sickens me to see people that stupid in a job.

You can get social welfare on a full-time degree course? Check that out, because I'm almost completely certain that students cannot claim the dole, even over summer. If that were the case, all students would be on it.

The course director may have been talking about the back to education allowance
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/social-welfare/social-welfare-payments/back-to-education/back_to_education_allowance

I would look into this route and do it all above board rather than assume that the stupid social welfare people will never cotton on.

I applied under the Labour Market Activation Initiative. The course was originaly a night course, held 2 evenings a week. Because of the lack of interest this course has been upgraded to a degree course and will be held with his other full time class. There is not a lot of people in that class either. The director told me it was all ok and I would still recieve my social welfare. Under normal circumstances, you don't get social welfare if you are at college full time.

Speak to your local conmmunity inforamtion centre they will tell you whether renting form your dad will affect your social welfare. By the tone of your message your dad is not the only a**hole in teh family
