Insect bites

Every September and October I get bitten by midges, and end up with a sort of cellulitis, where all around the bite goes red. I've been to the doctor for treatment on them, in fact the last two years, the date on the prescription has been the exact same! Last year, my whole calf ended up being inflammed, red and itchy. When I went to the doctor, her words were "oh sh*t!"

I'm not doing, eating or wearing anything different to what I do in the summer, when I know there are midges around, so I've a couple of questions

1 - why do the midges like me so much in these months?

2 - what can I do to stop being midge food?? Whats out there than I can use to prevent it?

mods - feel free to move if it isn't the right section!

use insect repellant. This is probably the only tip I have.

I'm in northern Oz and am paranoid about mosquito bites (dengue fever) and just lather it on liberally.

(correct me if I am wrong folks) I don't think that anyone is more prone to midgie bites than anyone else, but I do believe some people get a much more explosive histamine and immune reaction than others do to the same insult or bite. So you may in fact not be more susceptible - you just get more of an itch and are more aware of it?

I have exactly the same problem rebel girl - I'm currently eaten alive and have a very bad reaction too - have had cellulitis on my face recently. Constantly on a variety of anti-histamine tablets/creams and steroids.

I haven't found anything really useful yet either - have tried all the usual advice - ie taking garlic tablets, tea tree oil, citronella etc.

Also find most insect repellent useless - has to have DEET in it to work so I'm spraying myself with Jungle Formula now every night before bed - definitely not happy with this as it can't be healthy!

I also have a major problem with harvest mites at this time too - seem to pick them up when out with the dog. They're the absolute worst and nothing seems to kill them.
