I was looking at a set of Burner irons at the weekend and the guy selling them said he could not give them to me below €379 as this was cost price (Small enough shop, not a large retailer). they were down from €599 apparently.

I then went to a much bigger establishment where said clubs were available on sale for €349. Either they are selling below cost or Shop A was telling me fibs or his cost price is much hight than a bulk retailer. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I think you answered it yourself, it's obvious that a small retailer with small buying power will not get the clubs at the same rate as a major retailer, it's like the corner shop v's tesco. Golf is different as in I would say the cost price difference is not huge but significant enough to have the difference you quoted.

Depending on the model of the clubs too... It could be the case that the smaller retailer bought the clubs and has had them in stock for 'x' length of time. Then TM releases a super new model and discounts the older model so that the 'older' model are now available for less?
I don't work in the industry but I assume this can happen a lot. Maybe the wholesalers have a system in place to counter this... maybe its just scale?

So both seem to be ligitimate. In general, is there much of a mark-up in clubs does anyone know? My very short experience in retail showed me that goods at half price generally still have quite a mark-up.

    I guess Licksy is correct.

The large shops can buy cheaper.

Also club prices will drop as new models come out and maybe the smaller shops don't like dropping the prices as they want to protect their profit (or not loose money on them). It's not easy being a small shop especially that people are buying more from the internet.

This all explains why your man in the smaller shop was very, very eager to sell me the set of clubs. He even let me take a few out to the range, wheras when I went to the bigger shop I had to dance around the clubs for ages before finally asking someone for help.

I have noticed that some of the larger shops like McGuirks for example don't always offer the full set... so the tag price looks attractive but in reality it's missing a club.

Be sure to compare like with like

E.g. McGuirks Burner Plus are 4-SW
My local pro shop advertises 3-SW, obviously at a higher price.

Most pro shops / small shops will match the bigger stores for price.
Particularly if they have to order the clubs for you, since both big and small have to order from the same distributer.
Except where the store has already purchased a stock, they might sell below cost to clear.

very small mark up on clube, they try to make the money from clothing, trolleys, balls etc
