    Hi,
I'm heading off to New York & Boston soon. I'm in the market for an Ipod Nano and I was wondering where is the best place to buy in NY or Boston. Are they the same price in all the shops like here in Ireland or should I shop around?
Also, is it possible to buy iphones that are unlocked and sim-free?

    Thanks!

iPod prices will be the exact same throughout the States. You can only get an iPhone with a two year contract.

Well I suppose that rules out the iphone so.

Are there good savings to be had when buying a Nano?

incorrect you can buy a non contract phone in AT&T stores for $699 will need to be jailbroken and unlocked to work here.

ipod's from america have the advantage of not being db limited like euro ipod's.

you may want to hold off as long as you can cause new ipods are always brought out in september.

Pardon my ignorance but what do you mean by "db limited"?

.... as long as you already have an account with AT&T. I'm guessing the OP isn't an AT&T customer.

European iPods are Volume limited Donie75.

you can get a goPhone sim (AT&T pay as you go) for $25 which includes $25 of credit.

one of my friends done it when we were in the states this summer, i went and got a contract and canceled it.

Could you explain that to me?

The only variance will be sales tax, which differs from state to state. 4% in NY, 5% in Boston I think so pretty marginal if those are the only two states the OP will be in. Prices may still be better than Ireland though, depending on the exchange rate when you're over there... e.g the current 32GB iPod Touch costs €369 here, but in the US, it's $399, which is about €279 + 4% NY sales tax €12 = €291 - a nice €70 saving...

I like the OP will be going to the states soon, what's involved in canceling one of these contracts?
Is the only way to buy one ready to go over there?

You can't take out a contract without a social security number, hence my question. You will be expected to pay a hefty early termination fee as well as pay back the subsidy on the phone. I want to see what the above poster did, but iPhones are not offered PAYG and only full price to those with existing iPhone contracts as far as I'm aware.

    sure.

friend went into AT&T store, asked for a goPhone sim only, they asked you sure you don't want a phone. he said yes.

went to an AT&T store that had stock of the 3G S and asked for the non-contract version of the phone. handed over the dollars, walked out.

jailbroke the phone when he got home, unlocked it, registered it with the AT&T sim in it as to allow push notifications, then when he came home to ireland stuck a 3ireland sim in it.

Ah interesting, how much did he have to pay for the iphone?
