Few questions for any owners of the audi a5.

    1) What are they like to drive ?
    2) Fuel efficiency of the 2.7 TDI ?
    3) Is the drivers seat adjustable? I sat in one before but found they are quite narrow seats, there are two wings on the seats that I found dug into my legs a bit, can these be adjusted?

    Thanks

I have heard terrible things about their quality and reliability!

    From whatcar.co.uk

For For such a quick car, the 2.7 TDI is very economical. It's a smooth and refined engine, too. Competitive carbon emissions make it a sound choice for company car drivers.

Against The 2.7 TDI can't match the economy and emissions of the entry-level petrol, which is also much cheaper to buy. The 3.0 TDI is quicker and available with four-wheel drive.

The 2.7 TDI makes a great long-distance coupe, with a refined engine and strong performance. However, the cheapest petrol models are more economical and the 3.0 TDI is quicker.

    Key facts
0–60mph 7.6 secs Top speed 144 mph Average mpg 44.1 Tank range 617 miles

FWIW, a regular poster on here has one (not me), and has had a litany of problems with it.

The seat base bolsters you're referring to are not adjustable.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I have an A6 with the 2.7 TDI engine.
Its very smooth, has plenty of power and even with my heavy right foot still averages 45 mpg.

Also unless your driving on very good roads I would avoid the S Line suspension and 18 inch wheels as they are too firm for our crap roads.

Ive got a 1.8Tfsi A5 and Im very sorry I bought it. I got it new in April 2008 and Ive NEVER enjoyed a single drive in it. Now I love driving and typically like to get out driving in anything but this is just poor.
Dont buy a front drive A5 (the 2.7 is front drive), go for a quattro. The chassis cannot handle the little amount of power that the 1.8 has, the diesel would be a nightmare in front drive only.
Mine basically doesnt work at all on any surface worse than motorway and even on motorway it moved around as if its windy when in fact i could be a perfect day. I have had wheel alignment checked although no real improvement. It pulls on almost all road surfaces to such a degree that its sore arms after an hours drive. Now my previous car has same size tyres and not a hint of this crap (Audi TT) so the argument about big wheels doesnt really answer it. I guess it is build for perfect roads. Ive go 18" rims. 17" are standard but many people are running 19" as a factory option.

Audi & dealer refused to look at it any further and told me to get an engineers report. I got an engineer to look at mine as I was very unhappy. He found a certain looseness at passenger front wheel when it was jacked up which appeared to be coming from the steering rack. He recommended that it be checked. Interestingly I had already recorded in writing to dealer that there was something up with left front. Audi still refused to look at it. I finally refused to drive it on safety grounds and they finally sent an engineer on their behalf to check. He found same looseness. We then checked another car on the forecourt and same thing was found in it. They would then take no further action although to me, the engineer & anyone who has driven the car, there is a problem there.
So it has this handling problem, I also get the occasional wheel bearing type whine from left front wheel. It has serious problems with stones getting caught in brake guard. This was once a week approx compared to once a year on any other car Ive had.
Now my drivers seat back is starting to collapse and is very off putting going into a bend when it suddenly clicks & lets go.
Also, the dealer had the car set on set service intervals of 10k miles when the car should have variable servicing. I found though when I went for service, I was charged for longlife flexible service and then reset for 10k again. The whole thing is a joke and I had great difficulty is telling them it should be variable mileage between services. They finally agreed and are changing that tomorrow for me.
It also has serious wheel tramp on acceleration away from a standstill even a light acceleration thats why I would recommend the quattro. My previous car was quattro and handling wise etc, there is no comparison.
I feel the chassis was designed arond the quattro system and then the 'cheap' versions just fired out withou much design or thought.
So if buying an A5, get a quattro, get the additional steering assist as this may help with the pulling.
In relation to your seat problem, mine doesnt dig into my legs, Id say you were in the sport seat.

I'd expect the seats you sat into were sports seats - the normal ones don't have such firm bolsters.
Sports seats are more comfy imho, but they wouldn't be suitable for a "fuller framed" individual...

Servotronic (mentioned by mickdw) is standard on the 2.7TDi.
